Chapter 2 - THE SECRET BEHIND THE GRANT NAME

The emergency room smelled of antiseptic, coffee, and the exhaustion of people who had been waiting too long.

Claire sat on the edge of an examination bed with a blanket around her shoulders. A nurse had checked her wrist, documented the marks, and asked whether she wanted to speak privately with a counselor.

Claire had answered every question in a whisper.

Evelyn sat beside her.

She had removed Claire's wedding ring and placed it in a small paper envelope. She didn't know whether her daughter would ever want to wear it again.

"Mom," Claire said finally, "you shouldn't have done that."

Evelyn turned.

"Done what?"

"Sent people into the house. Called the police. Had Nathan fired."

"He was fired because of a documented investigation. I did not invent the evidence."

"But he'll blame me."

"He already blamed you for his own actions."

Claire looked down at her hands.

"You don't understand how he is when nobody else is around."

Evelyn's heart tightened.

"Then help me understand."

For several seconds, Claire said nothing.

Then the truth came out in fragments.

Nathan had started by criticizing small things. Her clothes. Her cooking. The way she spoke at dinner.

Lorraine joined him, insisting that Claire was ungrateful and incapable of managing a household.

Then came the financial restrictions.

Nathan persuaded Claire to combine their accounts. He said married couples shouldn't keep secrets. When she wanted to visit Evelyn, he complained that she was choosing her mother over her husband.

Eventually, he began monitoring her calls.

"He said you were interfering," Claire explained. "He told me you only helped us because you wanted to control me."

Evelyn stared at her daughter.

"I helped because I love you."

"I know that now."

"Did you ever tell him you wanted to leave?"

Claire's eyes filled again.

"Once. He told me nobody would believe me. He said everyone thought he was a wonderful husband."

Evelyn reached for her hand.

"Listen carefully. You do not have to decide the rest of your life tonight. You only have to be safe tonight."

Claire nodded, though fear remained in her expression.

A knock interrupted them.

Dana Ruiz stood in the doorway, holding a slim folder.

"Evelyn, I'm sorry to interrupt."

"Come in."

Dana glanced at Claire.

"I can return later."

"No," Claire said softly. "It's okay."

Dana entered.

"The termination has been processed under the company's conduct policy. Nathan's access has been suspended, and the investigation records are secured. We also notified legal counsel about the possibility of retaliation."

Evelyn nodded.

"Tell me what you found."

Dana opened the folder.

Nathan had approved several contracts with a consulting company called Vale Strategic Solutions. On paper, the company offered procurement advice and logistics optimization.

In reality, investigators had discovered that it shared a mailing address with a business registered to Lorraine.

Payments had been routed through multiple accounts. Several invoices described services that were never delivered.

The suspected losses were substantial.

But the most disturbing evidence came from internal messages.

Nathan had instructed a junior analyst to change vendor records after an audit request. When the employee refused, Nathan threatened to have him blacklisted from the industry.

"He used his position to pressure people," Dana said. "The company has preserved the relevant messages and transaction histories."

"Good," Evelyn replied. "Let the independent investigators handle the rest."

Claire looked confused.

"Why would he steal from his own company? He already earned a good salary."

"Greed rarely stops at what someone needs," Evelyn said.

Dana hesitated.

"There is one more issue. Nathan may have known your ownership connection."

Evelyn frowned.

"Explain."

"His employment records show that he attended an executive orientation after the acquisition. He received the corporate ownership disclosure. Grant Meridian Logistics is listed as a subsidiary of Grant Meridian Holdings."

Claire turned toward her mother.

"Wait. You own his company?"

"I founded the parent company," Evelyn explained. "I don't personally manage every department, and the board oversees daily operations. But yes, I hold a controlling interest through the family trust."

Claire stared at her.

"You never told me."

"I wanted you to build your own life without feeling you had to depend on my money."

"That's why Nathan kept asking whether you could introduce him to senior executives."

Evelyn went still.

"What did he say?"

"He said your company connections might help him get promoted. He always wanted to meet the board members."

Dana exchanged a glance with Evelyn.

"That may be relevant to the investigation."

Claire rubbed her forehead.

"He used to joke that he would make you respect him. I thought he was just ambitious."

Evelyn closed the folder.

"Ambition is not the problem. Dishonesty is."

Her phone vibrated.

A message from the property manager appeared on the screen.

Mr. Vale has called asking whether Mrs. Vale will return home tonight. He says he needs to speak with her privately.

Evelyn showed Claire.

Claire immediately stiffened.

"He'll come here."

"Hospital security has his name," Evelyn said. "He won't reach this room without being stopped."

"He'll tell everyone I'm unstable. He'll say I stole something or attacked him."

"Then we preserve the truth."

Evelyn turned to Dana.

"Please arrange for the company to retain every relevant record and ensure witnesses can report concerns without fear. Nothing gets altered, deleted, or quietly settled."

Dana nodded.

"I'll take care of it."

After Dana left, Claire stared at the hospital window.

"What happens now?"

"Tonight, we go somewhere safe. Tomorrow, we find you an attorney who represents your interests alone. We'll make sure you have access to your own money and documents."

"And if Nathan apologizes?"

Evelyn didn't answer immediately.

She remembered Claire's soaked sleeves, her trembling hands, and the way she had covered her head when Nathan approached.

"An apology can be a beginning," Evelyn said. "But it is not proof that someone has changed."

Claire leaned against her mother's shoulder.

For the first time that evening, she allowed herself to rest.

Across town, Nathan Vale sat in his darkened office, staring at the termination notice.

His career had collapsed in minutes.

His wife was gone.

His mother was calling repeatedly.

And the woman he had dismissed as a harmless, sentimental widow had become the one person he could no longer intimidate.

Nathan opened his contacts and selected a number.

When the call connected, he spoke in a low voice.

"I need a favor."

The man on the other end asked, "What kind?"

May you like

Nathan looked at the corporate investigation notice.

"I need to know exactly what Evelyn Grant has on me."
