Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

Daniel stared at the photograph until the faces blurred.
Vanessa had told him she first noticed him at a charity event. She had described it as a chance encounter, a conversation that continued over coffee, then a relationship that grew naturally.
The photograph suggested that her story had left out something important.
Miriam asked investigators to verify the date and location. The restaurant's records and a witness confirmed that Vanessa had met Julian there several times before she met Daniel.
That still did not prove a criminal plan, but it gave the investigators a reason to examine the timeline more closely.
Daniel struggled with the betrayal.
He had loved Vanessa. He had imagined her holding Noah during his first birthday, teaching him to ride a bicycle, and watching him grow into a confident young man.
Now he couldn't stop thinking about the camera going dark.
Maria reminded him that his son needed a father who could remain steady.
“Mr. Vale,” she said gently, “you don't have to understand every lie today. You just have to keep Noah safe today.”
The words helped.
Daniel began spending his mornings with Noah instead of hiding in his office. He learned which lullaby made the baby settle and how to recognize the difference between hunger and tiredness. Those ordinary moments became a kind of anchor.
Meanwhile, the investigation uncovered another transfer—this one made to a storage company under Julian's name. A search warrant led investigators to a box of files containing copies of Daniel's financial statements, draft trust amendments, and notes about the family home.
Some pages included personal information about Noah.
Daniel felt his anger rise, but Miriam reminded him that the material had to be documented properly.
“Let the process work,” she said. “Your strongest response is to protect your child and preserve the evidence.”
That afternoon, Vanessa requested a meeting.
She arrived at Miriam's office accompanied by her attorney. She looked composed, wearing a cream-colored suit and the expression of someone who believed she could still control the room.
“I want to see Noah,” she said.
Daniel answered carefully. “Not until the safety concerns have been assessed and the appropriate professionals agree on a plan.”
“He's my stepson.”
“And he is a baby who was frightened while you held a dangerously hot iron beside his crib.”
Vanessa's face tightened.
“You've made me sound monstrous.”
“I didn't make the recording.”
For a moment, her eyes flashed with anger. Then she looked down.
“I never intended to hurt him.”
Daniel wanted to believe that sentence. He also knew that intention did not erase risk.
“Then you need to be honest about what happened.”
Vanessa refused to discuss Julian.
The meeting ended without agreement.
As she left, her attorney handed Miriam a sealed envelope. It contained a draft statement in which Vanessa claimed that Maria had staged the incident because she wanted Daniel to divorce his wife.
The accusation was unsupported, but it revealed how far Vanessa was willing to go.
Daniel turned to Miriam.
“Can she really blame Maria for what we watched?”
“She can make an allegation,” Miriam said. “That doesn't make it true.”
Outside, rain began falling against the windows.
Daniel looked at the photograph again.

He had spent months believing that the biggest decision of his life was choosing whom to marry.
Now he understood that the most important decision was what kind of father he would be when the person he trusted most had betrayed him.
