Chapter 11 - The Final Trigger

Logan smashed the manual ventilation release valve on the far wall, and the industrial exhaust fans roared to life, sucking the toxic Halon gas out of the subterranean hallway.

Crisp, freezing winter air rushed in from the intake grates above.

Logan rushed over, checking my face, his eyes wild with adrenaline. "Are you alright? The baby?"

"We're fine," I said, my chest heaving, the empty syringe rolling away across the floor.

On the ground, Matthias was completely immobilized. The Succinylcholine had paralyzed his vocal cords, his limbs, and his diaphragm, leaving him staring at the ceiling in pure, unadulterated horror, able to breathe only shallow, reflexive gasps through his open mouth.

Beside him, Fiona dragged herself across the concrete, sobbing hysterically, throwing her arms around Logan’s knees. "Logan, please! He made me do it! He said he would kill me if I didn't help him set up the shell companies!"

Logan didn't even look down at her. He pulled his coat away from her grasp with utter disgust. "Save it for the federal prosecutors, Fiona."

Above us, the distant wail of state police sirens began to echo through the storm.

The estate's automated silent distress beacon—the one I had secretly rewired to the local precinct three days ago when I first got the threat—had finally done its job. The cavalry was arriving.

Logan smiled, a heavy sigh of relief escaping his chest. "It’s over, Serena. We have the drives. We have his confession on tape. You did it."

I looked down at Matthias’s frozen, terrified eyes, feeling a cold sense of justice wash through my soul. I was free. My daughter was safe. We were going to survive.

Then, the high-pitch whine of the vault’s electronic keypad suddenly chirped.

*BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.*

Logan stopped. The blood drained from his face.

"I didn't touch that," Logan whispered, raising his gun toward the massive, multi-ton vault door.

The heavy locking bolts inside the steel frame began to turn with a deep, sickening groan of grinding gears.

*Clank. Clank. Clank.*

Matthias’s eyes widened to an impossible degree, sheer, mind-breaking terror bleeding into his paralyzed expression. He tried to scream, but only a wet, pathetic wheeze escaped his throat. He wasn't looking at me.

He was looking at the vault door as it slowly swung open from the *inside*.

From the pitch-black darkness of the fortified bunker, a low, distorted voice boomed through the mansion's built-in intercom system, echoing out of every speaker in the ceiling:

*"Did you really think your husband was smart enough to plan this alone, Mrs. Dre?"*

A pair of polished black leather shoes stepped out from the shadows of the vault, crunching over the broken glass.

In their gloved hand, they held a detonator.

And on their wrist was the identical platinum crest of the Dre family seal.
