Chapter 11 - A Deeper Shadow

Three weeks later, the underworld had adjusted to the new order.

The Moretti family’s grip on Chicago was absolute. We moved back into the lakeside estate, the damaged gates rebuilt with titanium-reinforced steel, the estate gardens cleared of all traces of the firefight.

I sat at the mahogany desk in Dante’s study, reviewing the final accounting reconciliation of the absorbed Ivanov shell companies. My bruised ribs had healed to a faint yellow ache; the cuts on my face had faded into faint silver lines that I wore like armor.

I inserted the recovered black flash drive into the terminal to run a final decryption protocol on Viktor’s deep-storage archive.

The screen flickered green as the automated software broke through the final hidden partition.

"Drive decrypted," the mechanical system voice announced.

I glanced over the data casually, expecting to see offshore bank accounts or shipping manifests.

Instead, a folder titled *PROJECT PHOENIX - INTERNAL COMMS* popped up.

Frowning, I opened the subfolder. Inside were dozens of encrypted audio files and date-stamped surveillance photographs.

I clicked the most recent audio recording, dated four days before my kidnapping at the office garage.

A familiar voice crackled through the desktop speakers. It wasn't Viktor Ivanov.

It was Luca.

*"...She found the discrepancy in the shell ledger today,"* Luca’s voice said calmly on the tape. *"She’s preparing to take it to Miller. Grab her at the garage before she reaches the federal building. Make it look brutal. Make her desperate enough to call Dante’s name."*

A second voice, Viktor Ivanov’s, replied: *"Why? If Dante finds out I touched his wife, he will wage war!"*

*"That’s the point, you idiot,"* Luca replied with chilling calculated precision. *"Dante has been distracted, weak, obsessing over her for two years. As long as she’s alive out there in the ordinary world, he won't commit to taking the Five Families down. Push him over the edge. Force him to slaughter your family. When the dust settles, Dante will be overextended, the council will turn on him, and I will take the throne."*

My blood turned to pure liquid nitrogen.

The entire kidnapping. The torture in the slaughterhouse. The tip to the Ivanovs.

It had never been an accident. It had been engineered from inside Dante's innermost circle by the man he considered his brother.

Suddenly, the heavy mahogany doors of the study clicked shut.

I snapped my head up.

Luca stood by the door, wearing his usual calm, professional expression, slowly locking the deadbolt from the inside. In his right hand, fitted with a long cylindrical silencer, was a 9mm pistol pointed directly at my chest.

"You really should have left for Florence, Sofia," Luca said quietly, his thumb pulling back the hammer. "You always were too good at math."

Outside the reinforced windows, the distant sound of Dante’s convoy sirens screamed in the driveway, completely unaware of the barrel leveled at my heart.
