Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Bloodbath

The morning sun broke over Chicago’s skyline in a sharp, icy brilliance. Inside the top-floor boardroom of Sterling Tower, thirty stories above Michigan Avenue, the atmosphere was like a courtroom before an execution.

Richard Whitmore sat at the far end of the mahogany conference table. His eyes were hollow, sunken into dark purple sockets. He hadn't slept, nor had he changed out of the rumpled dress shirt he had worn during his midnight eviction. Across from him sat his chief financial officer, trembling so hard he couldn't keep his pen steady.

The double doors opened, and I walked into the room.

I was no longer wearing the torn, fragile gown from the night before. I wore a bespoke charcoal wool suit, my hair pulled back into a severe, elegant chignon, and on my wrist rested the platinum Patek Philippe my father had given me on my eighteenth birthday. Behind me walked Marcus Vance and five senior partners from the city’s most feared restructuring firm.

Richard flinched as if I had struck him.

"Emma..." he stammered, attempting to rise. "Please. Have mercy on the company. Three hundred people work at Whitmore Logistics. Their families rely on these jobs."

"Then you should have thought about those three hundred families before you embezzled thirty million dollars from their pension fund to pay off your baccarat debts in the Bahamas, Richard," I said, sliding into the high-backed leather chair at the head of the table.

Richard froze, half-standing, his face turning an ashen shade of gray. "How... how did you find out about that?"

"You kept your offshore accounts under a dummy corporation called 'Blue Horizon Holdings,'" Marcus Vance said, sliding a thick ledger across the polished wood. "You thought using a shell company in the Cayman Islands would hide the transactions. What you didn't realize is that the clearing bank you used was bought by Sterling Financial three years ago. We’ve had your transaction records since the day you proposed to Miss Sterling."

"You... you knew all along?" Richard whispered, collapsing back into his chair. "You knew I was underwater before Emma even moved into Graystone?"

"I knew," I said, resting my chin on my steepled fingers. "And I was going to quietly settle that debt for you after Grant and I married. I was going to absorb Whitmore Logistics into our supply chain division, save every single one of those three hundred jobs, and let you retire with your dignity intact."

A heavy, suffocating silence descended on the room. Richard looked at the mountain of evidence before him, realizing the sheer magnitude of what he had destroyed.

"You had salvation sitting in your living room, Richard," I continued quietly. "All you had to do was treat me like a human being. But you and your wife were so consumed by your pathetic social hierarchy, so desperate to prove that your faded bloodline was better than mine, that you threw it all away."

The door behind Richard clicked open.

Two federal agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission, accompanied by a pair of uniformed marshals, stepped into the room.

"Richard Whitmore?" the lead agent said, holding up a badge. "You are under arrest for securities fraud, wire fraud, and grand larceny involving employee pension funds. You have the right to remain silent."

Richard didn't move. He didn't protest. When the marshals pulled his arms behind his back and clicked the cuffs over his wrists, he simply looked at me, tears spilling down his withered cheeks.

"Where is Grant?" he choked out. "Where is my son?"

"Grant is currently waiting in the lobby downstairs," I told him without a shred of emotion. "He came here at six in the morning, begging the front desk security to let him see me. He even brought a box of my favorite pastries from the bakery downtown."

I stood up, adjusting the lapels of my blazer.

May you like

"I had security throw the pastries in the trash and tell him that if he stepped within fifty feet of this building again, I’d have him arrested for stalking."
