Chapter 5 - The Shadow Tightens

The grandfather clock in the vestibule struck eight o'clock.

Inside the grand ballroom, the lights dimmed slightly, and a spotlight shifted toward the elevated stage where the American flag and the colors of the United States Army stood side by side.

The master of ceremonies, a smooth-voiced civilian PR director, stepped up to the microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, and honored members of the Armed Forces. Please take your seats. Tonight, we celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Fort Ashford’s Logistics Command, and honor the men and women who keep our nation’s warfighters ready and lethal."

Applause rippled through the hall as the guests quickly returned to their tables.

At Table 1, Mason adjusted his cuffs once more, his heart racing with adrenaline. General Warren Pike had just entered through the private VIP entrance at the front of the stage. Pike was a massive man with a buzz cut, a chest full of medals, and the arrogant swagger of a regional kingpin who had operated without oversight for five years.

Pike caught Mason’s eye and gave a slight, knowing nod.

Mason grinned, his chest practically bursting through his jacket. *This is it,* he thought. *The star.*

"Before we begin our formal program," the announcer’s voice boomed over the speakers, "we have the distinct privilege of welcoming a surprise delegation from the Pentagon. Please rise for the arrival of the Senior Leadership."

The heavy double doors at the main entrance swung wide open.

Usually, when general officers arrive, an aide-de-camp announces them with pomp and circumstance. But tonight, there was no brass fanfare.

Instead, four imposing figures walked into the room in absolute, synchronized silence.

The entire ballroom collectively gasped.

Leading the group was General Anthony Vance, the four-star Commander of Army Materiel Command. Behind him walked General Marcus Hayes, the Vice Chief of Staff of the Army; General Evelyn Sterling, head of the Defense Logistics Agency; and Admiral Thomas Brooks, Deputy Commander of U.S. Northern Command.

Four of the highest-ranking military officers on the planet. Twelve stars between them.

A suffocating hush descended over the ballroom. Billionaire contractors instinctively stood straight. Staff officers spilled their drinks in haste to come to attention.

General Pike’s smile faltered on the stage. His brow furrowed in confusion. He hadn't been notified that General Vance was flying down from D.C., let alone the Vice Chief of Staff. This wasn't standard protocol for a regional command dinner.

Mason’s eyes widened with awe. "My God," he whispered to Vanessa, his voice trembling with euphoria. "Look at them. Pike didn't just invite the brass... he brought the entire Joint Chiefs’ inner circle. They’re here for me, Vanessa. They came to pin the star on me personally!"

Vanessa grabbed his arm, tears of triumph welling in her eyes. "I knew it! Oh, Mason, you’re going to be the youngest Major General in the Army one day!"

My father, Richard, leaned over, his eyes bulging with sheer reverence. "Mason, son... I don't even have words. You've brought incredible honor to our family name. Incredible!"

The four general officers marched down the central red carpet with slow, measured tread. Their faces were carved from granite. Not a single one of them smiled. Not a single one looked toward the stage where General Pike stood waiting with an outstretched hand.

Instead, they halted precisely in the center of the grand aisle.

General Vance, the four-star giant, turned his head and looked back toward the open double doors.

Then, Vance’s voice cut through the silence like an artillery shell:

"Room... TEN-HUT!"
