Chapter 8 - Jessica's Bitter End

While the Morrisons were learning the cost of their arrogance, Jessica Reynolds was discovering that the law has a remarkably long memory.
Two days after fleeing the Meadowbrook estate, Jessica was sitting in the business lounge of JFK International Airport, waiting for a flight to Miami.
She had used the last four thousand dollars in her personal emergency savings to book a first-class ticket, determined to start fresh, find another wealthy executive, and put the entire Morrison nightmare behind her. She was wearing her oversized designer sunglasses, sipping a mimosa, and admiring her luggage.
“Attention passengers,” a voice droned through the terminal intercom. “Boarding for Flight 842 to Miami will begin shortly at Gate 12.”
Jessica smiled, feeling a brief flash of relief. *I made it,* she thought. *Brendan took the fall, and I’m walking away clean.*
She stood up, grabbed her handbag, and began wheeling her luggage toward the boarding gate.
“Ms. Jessica Reynolds?”
A firm hand clamped down onto her shoulder.
Jessica gasped, spinning around.
Standing behind her were two plainclothes detectives from the NYPD Financial Crimes Division, flanked by two Port Authority police officers and a junior attorney from Arthur Vance’s office.
“What is this?” Jessica demanded, her voice shrill and defensive. “Let go of me! I have a flight to catch!”
The lead detective pulled out a badge and a signed warrant. “Jessica Reynolds, you are under arrest for grand larceny in the second degree, interstate transportation of stolen property, and receipt of embezzled corporate assets.”
The color drained from Jessica’s face instantly. “What? That’s impossible! I didn't steal anything! Brendan bought me those gifts! He’s the one who took the money!”
The junior attorney stepped forward, holding a tablet displaying purchase receipts and serial numbers.
“Ms. Reynolds,” the attorney said smoothly, “those ‘gifts’ were purchased using funds directly diverted from the Sterling Sovereign Trust via corporate wire fraud. As of forty-eight hours ago, every piece of jewelry, designer handbag, and high-value asset purchased with those funds was placed under a federal civil forfeiture order.”
The detective reached out and grabbed Jessica’s Louis Vuitton tote.
“Hey! Don’t touch that!” Jessica screamed, clawing at the detective’s arm. “That’s mine! That’s worth five thousand dollars!”
The two Port Authority officers moved in instantly. Within seconds, Jessica’s arms were pulled behind her back, and the cold steel of handcuffs clicked tightly around her wrists.
The entire airport lounge turned to watch. Travelers pulled out their phones, snapping photos and recording video as the glamorous young woman in designer clothes began screaming and thrashing like a wild animal.
“Let me go! Brendan! This is Brendan’s fault!” Jessica shrieked, tears streaming down her face as her sunglasses were knocked askew, dangling off one ear. “I didn't know the money was stolen! I swear to god I didn't know!”
“Tell it to the judge, ma’am,” the detective said, picking up her luggage.
As they marched her through the crowded terminal in handcuffs, Jessica looked at the television monitors mounted along the concourse.
Every single screen was broadcasting a live press conference from Vanguard Tower.
On the screen was Cassidy Sterling, looking serene, powerful, and radiant, announcing the creation of a hundred-million-dollar philanthropic foundation dedicated to supporting single mothers and providing free legal protection for domestic abuse survivors.

The crowd in the terminal began murmuring in admiration at the woman on the screen, while Jessica Reynolds was dragged into the police substation below, her dreams of luxury ending in a cold, concrete holding cell.
