Chapter 6 - The Trapped Viper

Richard's demeanor changed instantly. The vulnerability vanished, replaced by an arctic, predatory calm.

"Stay here with the boys," he said quietly, standing up.

"Richard, who is that?" Emily asked, standing as well.

"The police," Richard replied, his jaw locking. "And our guest."

Emily followed him down the stairs at a distance, stopping at the landing of the second floor.

The heavy front doors swung open. Standing in the foyer, illuminated by the flashing red-and-blue emergency lights outside, were two uniformed county sheriffs, a senior detective, and Victoria Lane.

Victoria was in handcuffs.

Her expensive ivory dress was ruined, soaked with rain and mud around the hem. Her blonde hair hung in damp, ratty clumps, and her makeup was smeared across her pale face.

"Richard!" Victoria screamed the moment she saw him descending the stairs. "Tell them to take these off! Tell them! This is a domestic misunderstanding! You cannot let them do this to me!"

Senior Detective Miller, a gray-haired veteran who had worked high-profile Silicon Valley cases for decades, stepped forward, holding a clear evidence bag. Inside the bag was Toby's cracked tablet.

"Mr. Hawthorne," Miller said gravely. "We intercepted Ms. Lane at the private airfield in San Jose. She was attempting to board a charter flight to Zurich. We also executed an emergency warrant on her vehicle. We found two passports under different aliases, three unregistered bank accounts, and six vials of liquid diazepam."

Richard stopped at the bottom of the stairs. He didn't look at Victoria. He looked at the detective. "Diazepam? The sedative?"

"Yes, sir," Miller said, casting a disgusted glance at Victoria. "The dosage levels were consistent with pediatric sedation. We suspect she was planning to drug the children to keep them compliant during the travel."

Emily, listening from the landing, felt her stomach violently churn. She grabbed the banister to keep from falling. Victoria hadn't just pushed Toby; she had been systematically planning to poison and abduct the triplets.

"You monster," Emily gasped, her voice carrying down the marble hall.

Victoria looked up, spotting Emily. Her face twisted into an expression of pure, unadulterated venom.

"You!" Victoria spat, lunging against the officer holding her arm. "You dirty little maid! You think you won?! Look at you, wearing his clothes, acting like you belong here! You're nothing! You clean toilets for minimum wage! Richard would never look at someone like you! He was going to marry *me*!"

"Take her out," Richard said. His voice was so quiet it was terrifying.

"Richard, please!" Victoria shrieked as the officers dragged her toward the rain. "I did it for us! Those brats were ruining you! They take all your time, all your focus! We could have had our own life! Richard!"

"Detective Miller," Richard said, stepping forward. "File every possible charge. Attempted murder. Aggravated child abuse. Grand larceny. Fraud. Embezzlement. Use my personal legal team. Deny bail at any cost. If she breathes outside a cell before trial, I will hold the entire department accountable."

"Understood, Mr. Hawthorne. She isn't seeing the sun for a very long time."

The doors slammed shut, cutting off Victoria’s hysterical screams.

Silence returned to the foyer.

Richard stood alone at the base of the imperial staircase. The house was cold, smelling of rain, antiseptic, and old scotch. Slowly, he turned around and looked up the long flight of stairs.

Emily was standing there, looking down at him.

The distance between them felt like miles.
