Chapter 9 - Building the Empire

By December, the Chicago winter had arrived in full force, blanketing the city in a pristine layer of white snow.

My life, however, had never been warmer or more vibrant.

With the formal dissolution of Hale Logistics and the successful recovery of my grandfather’s commercial real estate trust, I officially launched my own corporate restructuring and compliance firm: Vanguard Advisory Group.

Operating out of a modern, glass-walled office suite in downtown Chicago overlooking the frozen expanse of Lake Michigan, our firm specialized in auditing mid-to-large-scale corporations for hidden liabilities, fraudulent tax shelters, and executive embezzlement. In a post-scandal corporate landscape, clients were lining up for forensic accountants and legal specialists who couldn't be bought, intimidated, or fooled by glossy balance sheets.

Marcus Vance had served as my primary strategic consultant during the firm's launch, helping me secure our initial portfolio of high-value corporate accounts. But what started as a professional collaboration had slowly, naturally evolved into something much deeper.

On a Friday evening just two weeks before Christmas, Marcus invited me out for what he claimed was a “routine business dinner” to celebrate our final quarterly acquisition.

Instead of a downtown boardroom or a bustling financial district steakhouse, his private car drove us north along the lakefront toward a secluded, beautifully restored historic mansion in Evanston that served as Mercer & Associates’ private hospitality estate.

When we stepped inside, the foyer was lit by the soft amber glow of a massive stone fireplace, and a string quartet was playing gentle classical melodies in the grand parlor.

Marcus helped me off with my wool overcoat, his hands lingering warm and steady on my shoulders.

“A business dinner in a private mansion with a string quartet?” I raised an eyebrow, turning around to face him with a teasing smile. “Impressive corporate expense reporting, counselor.”

Marcus smiled—that rare, genuine smile that completely softened the razor-sharp intensity he usually projected in the courtroom. He reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a small, dark velvet box.

My breath caught slightly in my throat.

“When I first met you, Olivia, you were walking into my office with a stack of corporate tax ledgers and a quiet, terrifying determination to burn down a corrupt legacy,” Marcus said softly, stepping closer and taking both of my hands in his. “Over the past year, I’ve watched you build a new life from the ashes, protect your daughter with the fierceness of a lioness, and prove to the entire city that you are an unstoppable force.”

He opened the velvet box. Inside rested a stunning, custom-designed diamond ring—not flashy or ostentatious, but elegant, timeless, and brilliantly clear.

“I don't want to be just your legal counsel, and I don't want to be just your business partner,” Marcus whispered, looking deep into my eyes. “I want to be your partner in everything, Olivia. Will you marry me?”

I looked at the ring, then up at Marcus’s face, seeing the absolute devotion, respect, and unwavering loyalty shining in his dark eyes. He didn't want me for my status, my inheritance, or my compliance. He loved me precisely because I was fierce, independent, and unbreakable.

“Yes,” I whispered, tears of joy stinging my eyes. “Yes, Marcus, I will.”

He slid the ring onto my finger, pulled me against his chest, and kissed me with a depth of passion and tenderness that made every hardship, every betrayal, and every painful memory of my past feel like a distant, irrelevant dream.
