Chapter 7 - Trial by Fire

The estate was under full-scale siege. Heavy gunfire echoed from the front courtyards, accompanied by the distinct chatter of automatic assault weapons and the rhythmic concussions of tactical grenades.

The door to my booth was kicked open. I flinched, curling into a ball, but strong hands grabbed me by the forearms, hoisting me to my feet.

"Move," Dante commanded. He had a smudge of soot across his cheekbone and held an automatic rifle in his left hand, a sidearm in his right.

"What is happening?" I cried, stumbling over spent bullet casings as he dragged me through the destroyed conference room.

"Vincent sold the estate's security codes to Moretti's strike team," Dante said, his tone icy and analytical despite the chaos unfolding around us. "They know the blind spots in my camera grid. They breached the western perimeter."

Marco appeared at the end of the corridor, his face covered in sweat and blood, accompanied by four surviving loyal guards.

"Boss! The tunnel to the helipad is compromised!" Marco yelled over the alarms. "Vincent’s men cut the power to the lift. We have to take the surface route through the conservatory to reach the armory bunker!"

"Where is Vincent?" Dante demanded.

"Heading for the garage! He’s trying to take the armored transport!"

A barrage of bullets chewed through the plaster walls of the corridor, sending wooden splinters flying like shrapnel. One of Dante’s guards took a round to the neck and collapsed, choking on blood.

Dante instantly pushed me behind him, using his broad shoulders to shield my body against the wall. He returned fire with three bursts, dropping two men dressed in black tactical gear who had breached the far corner of the hallway.

"Cara, listen to me," Dante said, turning his head slightly, his breath hot against my cheek. "Behind that door is the glass conservatory. We have twenty yards of open terrain before the armory doors. When I say run, you run straight for the reinforced steel vault. You do not look back. You do not stop. Do you understand?"

"I don't want to die here, Dante," I whispered, terrified, my hands shaking so violently the bandages began to slip.

His gaze locked onto mine, fierce and unyielding. "You saved my life on that mountain. I don't leave debts unpaid. You are not dying today. Run!"

He shoved open the heavy glass doors into the conservatory. We burst out into the greenhouse, surrounded by exotic orchids, hanging ferns, and shattered skylights through which heavy rain poured.

Across the lawn, muzzle flashes illuminated the darkness.

"SNIPER!" Marco shouted, diving behind a concrete planter.

A high-caliber round smashed through the glass roof, obliterating the tiled floor inches from my feet. I fell, the impact knocking the wind out of my lungs.

Through the rain-streaked darkness, I saw a laser sight trace across the floor, climbing up my leg, heading straight for my chest.
