Chapter 6 - The Five-Year Secret

The heavy oak doors of the master suite burst inward with a deafening crash. A tactical assault team clad in matte-black body armor flooded into the room, their assault rifles raised, tactical flashlights cutting through the dim, tension-choked atmosphere in blinding cones of white light.

"Federal agents! Nobody move! Hands where we can see them!"

The commanding officer, Lead Special Agent Marcus Vance, stepped forward, his cold eyes sweeping over the shattered vanity, the blood smeared across the marble floor, and the disheveled matriarch of the Sterling dynasty.

Victoria did not surrender with dignity. Like a cornered serpent, she hissed, her diamond-encrusted hands clawing at the nearest agent’s vest as two burly officers forced her arms behind her back.

"Get your filthy hands off me!" Victoria shrieked, her voice echoing down the cavernous hallways of Sterling Castle. "Do you have any idea who I am? I own the judges in this district! I own the governor! Julian, you bastard! Tell them who I am!"

Julian didn’t utter a single syllable to defend her. He stood like an immovable monolith, his tailored tuxedo soaked from pulling Clara out of the pool, his knuckles bruised from dodging his mother’s murderous swings with the silver candlestick. His arm remained banded tightly around Clara’s shivering frame.

"Victoria Sterling," Agent Vance stated with ice-cold detachment, pulling a pair of steel cuffs from his tactical belt and ratcheting them tightly around the matriarch's wrists. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, wire fraud, racketeering, and the attempted homicide of Clara Sterling. You have the right to remain silent."

"You fools!" Victoria spat, her manicured wig slipping slightly, revealing gray roots beneath the polished illusion she had maintained for decades. She twisted violently in the officers' grip, her bloodshot eyes drilling straight into Clara with feral malice. "You think you’ve won, little girl? You think you can steal my son and my fortune? Tell him! Tell him why your signature is on Arthur’s secret trust from five years ago!"

The room plunged into an abrupt, suffocating silence. Even the tactical officers hesitated for a split second, sensing the seismic shift in the air.

Julian’s breath hitched. His jaw clenched so hard the muscle feathered beneath his pale skin. He looked down at his young bride. Clara’s head was bowed, her wet chestnut hair clinging to her pale cheeks, water dripping steadily from the torn hem of her ruined lace wedding gown onto the parquet floor.

She wasn't looking at Victoria. She was looking at the floor, her chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow breaths. She wasn't crying out in protest. She wasn't denying it.

"Clara?" Julian’s voice was barely a whisper, but to Clara, it carried the weight of a sledgehammer. The absolute trust in his slate-gray eyes flickered, replaced by a sudden, agonizing flash of doubt. "What is she talking about?"

"Take her out of here," Agent Vance ordered sharply, gesturing to his men.

"Ask her, Julian!" Victoria screamed as the agents hauled her backward toward the corridor. Her heels dragged against the polished oak floor, leaving scuff marks behind. "Ask your saintly little orphan bride how she really ended up in your life! It wasn't an accident! It was never an accident!"

The heavy mahogany doors slammed shut behind the arresting officers, cutting off Victoria’s psychotic laughter, though the echoes seemed to linger in the corners of the cavernous bedroom like poison gas.

Outside, the wail of sirens painted the ornate plaster ceiling in flashing pulses of crimson and sapphire.

Inside, the silence was deafening.

Julian released his grip on Clara’s waist. It was subtle, barely an inch of space, but to Clara, it felt like being kicked back into the freezing depths of the pool.

"Julian, please," Clara whispered, her voice trembling. She reached out toward him, her fingers brushing the damp lapel of his jacket. "Let me explain."

"Did my father know you?" Julian asked. His voice was dangerously low, stripped of all warmth. This was the Julian Sterling the business world feared—the calculating CEO who dismantled billion-dollar conglomerates without blinking. "Five years ago, Clara. Five years ago, I didn't even know you existed. We met eighteen months ago at a charity gala in Manhattan when you spilled champagne on my coat. Or was that a lie, too?"

"No! That was real! Meeting you—falling in love with you—that was the only real thing in my entire life!" Tears finally spilled over Clara’s eyelashes, carving tracks through the grime and pool water on her cheeks. "Your father, Arthur... he found me five years ago when I was just out of college. But it’s not what Victoria thinks. I didn't take his money. I was protecting it."

Julian stared at her, his brow furrowed in fierce skepticism. "Protecting it from whom?"

May you like

"From her," Clara choked out. "Arthur knew Victoria was poisoning him. And he knew that if he died, she would kill you next."
