Chapter 7 - The Gatehouse Ambush

The heavy wrought-iron gates of the Abernathy estate loomed like the entrance to a gothic fortress against the gathering twilight. Rain began to fall, turning the winding gravel driveway into slick gray mud.

Marcus remained parked half a mile down the private road, hidden behind an abandoned maintenance shed, with high-definition digital cameras and a direct satellite uplink ready to stream whatever happened next.

I walked toward the stone gatehouse alone, clutching a leather briefcase containing high-resolution color photocopies of the toxicity trial summaries. The real documents and the original hard drives remained safely secured with Marcus.

The heavy oak door of the gatehouse creaked open before I could even knock.

Kieran stood in the doorway, his hair disheveled, his silk tie undone, and his eyes bloodshot. The polished corporate prince had completely disintegrated into a trembling wreck.

"Get inside," he whispered, grabbing my sleeve and pulling me into the dimly lit, wood-paneled room. He locked the heavy bolt behind us. "Did anyone follow you?"

"Nobody followed me," I said, shaking his hand off my arm with disgust. "Where is Eleanor?"

"Up at the main house," Kieran muttered, pacing the small Persian rug like a caged animal. "She has four private security contractors with her. Ex-military. Freya, you don't understand what you're dealing with. She’s not going to pay you fifty million. She’s going to force you to sign a confession stating you fabricated the records to extort the foundation, and then..."

He swallowed hard, unable to finish the sentence.

"And then she’s going to kill me," I finished for him, my voice completely steady. "Just like she killed my father."

Kieran stopped pacing. He stared at me, his eyes wide with genuine horror. "I didn't know about that! I swear to God, Freya, I didn't know about your father's car until two years after it happened! Mother told me it was an accident! When I found out the truth, she told me that if I ever said a word, she’d make sure I took the fall for the offshore shell companies!"

"You stayed married to me!" I shouted, the fury finally breaking through my restraint. "You kissed me every night knowing your family murdered my father!"

"I was trying to keep you safe!" Kieran cried out, tears spilling over his cheeks. "As long as you were my wife, as long as you were inside the family umbrella, Mother couldn't touch you! But you filed for divorce! You opened the books!"

"Because you were poisoning children for profit!" I slammed the briefcase onto the round oak table between us. "Six hundred pediatric patients suffered irreversible kidney damage, Kieran! Your family knew! You built this entire empire on dead children and my father’s stolen blood!"

Kieran looked at the briefcase as if it were a bomb. "Give it to me. Let me take it to the board. I can force her out—"

The sharp sound of gravel crunching outside cut him off.

Through the gatehouse window, high-beam headlights sliced through the rain. A black armored SUV had just pulled up, blocking the exit driveway entirely.
