Chapter 7 - The Secret Ledger

The penthouse at 740 Park Promenade was dead silent when Patrick Vance stepped inside, flanked by four federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and two digital forensics specialists.

The grand residence, with its floor-to-ceiling glass walls overlooking the city, had once been Avery’s sanctuary. But over five years, Grant had turned it into a gilded cage, filling it with cold minimalist art and surveillance cameras that monitored Avery’s every move under the guise of "home security."

"Search team, proceed to the study," Patrick ordered. "Focus on the antique clock in the west corner. Execute with utmost care."

Within three minutes, the senior tech knelt before the heavy mahogany grandfather clock. Using a thin pry tool, he dislodged the false floor beneath the pendulum weights.

A small, matte-black satellite handset emerged, nestled inside a lead-lined sleeve designed to block remote wipe signals.

"We have it, DA Vance," the technician announced. "Model is an encrypted Tor-routed Ghost unit. Entering the passcode Keating provided: 0-9-1-4-1-8."

A soft chime echoed in the silent study. The screen flickered to life.

Patrick stood behind the technician, watching as the directories loaded. What they found within the first ten minutes eclipsed even their darkest expectations.

It wasn't merely corporate fraud. Grant had established an intricate web of shell corporations designed to siphon over forty million dollars from Whitmore Logistics into unmonitored accounts registered in Belize and the Cook Islands. But the financial treason paled in comparison to the encrypted chat application labeled *'Project Clean Slate.'*

Patrick’s hands clenched into white-knuckled fists as he read the exported chat logs from six weeks prior.

*User 'Apex' (Grant):* "The psychiatric route is getting complicated. The Vance trust requires three independent board-certified doctors to sign off on a guardianship petition. Her father’s influence makes that risky."

*User 'Specter':* "Contingency options remain viable. A mechanical failure during her commute to the upstate prenatal clinic. The road down Route 9 has no guardrails along the river gorge. A clean push from behind by an untraceable flatbed."

*User 'Apex':* "What is the timeline?"

*User 'Specter':* "Once the retainer clears your Cayman entity. Fifty percent down. Fifty percent upon confirmation of double fatality."

*Double fatality.*

Grant hadn't just planned to eliminate Avery. He had deliberately ordered the death of his own unborn child to erase any competing claim to the Vance estate.

"Dear God," one of the junior agents whispered, stepping back from the screen in disgust. "The guy is a complete sociopath."

Patrick’s face was entirely expressionless, but beneath the surface, a cold, primordial fury was roaring. For decades, Patrick had believed in the law—in its structures, its safeguards, and its measured justice. But looking at the digital blueprint for his daughter and granddaughter's execution, something fundamentally broke and re-formed inside him.

He pulled out his cell phone and dialed Elena Cruz directly.

"Cruz," Patrick spoke into the receiver, his voice frighteningly steady. "Upgrade the charges immediately."

"To what, sir?"

"Attempted first-degree murder, solicitation of capital murder, and high treason against domestic financial infrastructure," Patrick said. "And call the Department of Justice. Grant Whitmore is no longer just a state prisoner. He is a priority flight-risk terrorist asset. I want him placed in solitary confinement with round-the-clock suicide watch. No bail. No visitors. Not even his mother."
