Chapter 7 - The Eve of the Execution

By Friday evening, Valenti House was transformed into an opulent fortress of deceit.

The grand ballroom on the ground floor was a sea of imported white calla lilies, draped silks, and crystal chandeliers that scattered thousands of diamond-like reflections across the gilded mirrors. Caterers moved like synchronized clockwork, polishing champagne flutes, arranging towers of caviar, and setting out silver platters for the two hundred elite guests arriving for the rehearsal gala.

Vivian Cross was in her element.

She stood in the center of the grand foyer wearing an emerald-green silk gown that clung to her curves like venomous ivy, a glass of vintage Dom Pérignon in her hand. Her laughter drifted above the string quartet playing softly in the corner—bright, musical, and completely hollow.

Julian Vance stood beside her, dressed in a custom tuxedo, looking distinctly less nervous than he had twenty-four hours ago. He leaned in, whispering into her ear with a discreet, self-satisfied grin.

“The judge signed,” Julian murmured, masking his mouth with his champagne flute. “The temporary conservatorship is stamped and sealed. The offshore accounts are undergoing the primary transfer protocol as we speak. By the time the vows are exchanged tomorrow at noon, Cross Holdings will officially own fifty-one percent of the logistics voting shares.”

Vivian took a delicate sip of champagne, her blue eyes gleaming with unholy triumph.

“And the old woman?” she asked quietly.

“Sedated in the private suite,” Julian replied. “The transport van is scheduled to arrive at midnight under the cover of the rehearsal reception noise. No sirens, no fuss. Sterling signed the medical transfer papers. Adrian won't even realize she’s not in the house until after the ceremony.”

“And where is my devoted fiancé?” Vivian asked, scanning the glittering crowd.

“His plane had a minor mechanical delay leaving Frankfurt,” Julian whispered. “He landed an hour ago. Marcus is escorting him directly from the airfield. He’ll arrive just in time for the midnight toast.”

Vivian smiled, a predatory, beautiful creature standing at the absolute peak of her ambition. “Perfect. Let him arrive exhausted. He won't question why his mother is too tired to greet him.”

Upstairs, in the shadowed service corridor, I stood watching them through the decorative iron balustrade of the second-floor gallery.

I was dressed in a clean, crisp black uniform, my hair pinned back, carrying a silver tray with water carafes. To anyone looking up, I was simply an invisible piece of household machinery moving through the background of extreme wealth.

The earpiece clicked.

*“Sophie. Marcus here,”* the voice murmured. *“Adrian is entering the south gate now. The rehearsal dinner is our containment zone. All exterior gates are on lockdown under my command. No one leaves this estate without Adrian’s direct authorization.”*

“What about the transport van coming for Eleanor?” I whispered into the small microphone hidden beneath my collar.

*“The transport van is ours,”* Marcus said with grim satisfaction. *“Two federal marshals are sitting in the front seats. When Dr. Sterling attempts to hand over Eleanor’s transfer papers at midnight, he will be arrested on site for aggravated elder abuse, medical fraud, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.”*

A wave of cold anticipation washed over me. It was happening. The trap was closing, its iron jaws tightening around Vivian’s throat while she laughed and drank champagne below.

Suddenly, a heavy hand grabbed my shoulder from behind and shoved me roughly against the wall.

My silver tray crashed to the floor, water spilling across the carpet.

I turned around, my heart leaping into my throat.

Rachel Monroe stood over me, flanked by two private security guards who didn't wear Valenti uniforms. They were large, thick-necked men in black suits with discreet earpieces—Vivian’s private hires.

“Did you really think I wouldn't notice?” Rachel hissed, her face contorted in vicious triumph.

“Notice what?” I said, trying to pull away, but the two guards immediately grabbed my arms, pinning me against the wall with brutal efficiency.

Rachel reached into her pocket and pulled out an electronic RF scanner. The device was beeping rhythmically, its red indicator light blinking directly over my collar.

“You’ve been transmitting,” Rachel whispered, stepping close enough that I could smell the stale coffee on her breath. “The private security team detected an unauthorized encrypted frequency bouncing off the internal relays. It took us twenty minutes to triangulate it.”

She reached up, ripped my collar open, and tore the tiny microphone and wire from my shirt, crushing the plastic transmitter beneath the heel of her nursing shoe.

“Who are you working for?” Rachel snarled, slapping me hard across the face.

The sting exploded across my cheek, making my ears ring, but I didn't make a sound. I glared at her, tasting iron on my lip.

“Call Miss Cross,” Rachel ordered the guards. “Tell her we found the leak. We lock this little bitch in the wine cellar until the midnight transport leaves. If she makes a sound, break her jaw.”

The two guards dragged me backward toward the service stairs. I thrashed against their grip, trying to kick out, but their hands were like iron clamps. They dragged me down the dark stone stairs into the sub-basement, past the boilers, straight toward the heavy steel-reinforced door of the old storage vault.

They threw me inside.

I hit the cold concrete floor hard, scraping my knees.

“Enjoy the dark, Sophie,” Rachel sneered from the doorway, her eyes flashing with cruel delight. “By the time anyone opens this door, Vivian will be Mrs. Adrian Valenti, your brother will be thrown out of his hospital bed, and you will be facing twenty years for corporate espionage.”

The heavy steel door slammed shut.

The deadbolts turned with three loud, echoing clunks.

Total, suffocating darkness swallowed me whole.
