Chapter 5 - The Manufacturer's Secret

Two weeks after the lawsuits were filed, I received an unexpected certified letter in the mail. It wasn't from Pendelton, and it wasn't from the court.
It was from the corporate headquarters of the bicycle manufacturer in Seattle.
Curious, I tore open the envelope in my home office. Inside was an official memo from their executive vice president of public relations and risk management, along with a corporate check made out to me in the amount of $2,500.
I scanned the letter, my eyebrows rising in surprise:
Dear Mrs. Bennett, Following our internal audit of the defective bicycle component that led to your initial warranty claim, our product safety engineering team conducted a comprehensive metallurgical stress analysis on the failed batch. We discovered a critical manufacturing defect in the front fork assembly across an entire production run of models manufactured in late autumn.
Furthermore, our public relations department reviewed the documentation regarding the subsequent destruction of the replacement unit at your residence by a third party. While unfortunate, your diligent documentation of the entire sequence of events has provided invaluable evidence regarding product liability and consumer safety.
As a gesture of our profound gratitude for your professionalism—and to assist with any legal or security measures you are undertaking—we are enclosing a corporate safety compliance grant of $2,500, along with a lifetime VIP warranty on all future purchases.
I leaned back in my chair, staring at the check.
My sister’s psychotic, unhinged temper tantrum had not only resulted in a civil lawsuit and public exposure; it had inadvertently triggered a corporate reward for my diligence.
I walked downstairs, handed the check and the letter to David, and smiled.

"Well," David laughed, shaking his head in disbelief. "Remind me never to get on your bad side, Cat. You turn a family meltdown into a corporate bonus."
"Never underestimate the power of a paper trail," I replied, kissing him on the cheek.
