Chapter 8 - The Ghost of the South End

The winter wind howled through the narrow, brick-lined alleys of the North End, rattling the windowpanes of Nora’s apartment, but inside, the atmosphere was warm and still.
Three months had passed since Dominic stepped into her office that Friday evening, and the quiet professional partnership between them had slowly, naturally blossomed into something deeper, fiercer, and far more terrifying than either of them had anticipated. They didn't talk about labels or futures; in Dominic’s world, drawing someone into your inner circle was a declaration of war against anyone who might seek to exploit them.
And in the underworld of Boston, enemies were always watching.
It was a Tuesday afternoon when the peace was shattered. Nora was sitting at her executive desk on the top floor of Russo Logistics, reviewing a stack of incoming shipping manifests, when the heavy oak office doors slammed open.
Two of Dominic’s senior security guards burst in, their faces grim and tense.
“Ms. Hayes,” the lead guard, Marcus, barked urgently. “We need to move. Now.”
Nora stood up immediately, her heart skipping a beat. “What’s happened? Is it Dominic?”
“Dominic is handling it at the Beacon Hill residence, but an intelligence leak compromised one of our perimeter holding sites this morning,” Marcus said, grabbing her laptop and shoving it into her leather briefcase with practiced efficiency. “Declan Shaw managed to slip out of a low-security debtor’s hold in Rhode Island three days ago. He’s back in Boston, and he has nothing left to lose.”
The name hit Nora like a physical blow. The air rushed out of her lungs, and for a brief, terrifying second, she was back in that dingy kitchen in Dorchester, staring at the glowing tip of a cigarette.
“How did he find me?” she choked out, her hands trembling.
“He didn't find you on his own,” Marcus said firmly, guiding her swiftly toward the private elevator. “He made a desperate deal with a rival crew from Southie who wanted to send a message to Dominic. They think using you as leverage is a shortcut to breaking him.”
Anger flared instantly through Nora’s terror, burning away the last remnants of her fear. She wasn't the terrified waitress hiding in a coat anymore. She was the head logistics coordinator of a multi-million-dollar empire, protected by a man who had rebuilt her life from the ashes.
“Where is Dominic?” she demanded as they stepped into the elevator.
“He’s already en route to the private warehouse on the harbor where Declan and his associates are hoarded,” Marcus replied grimly. “He told us to secure you at the safehouse, but Dominic’s phone is currently pinging directly from the waterfront.”
Nora’s instincts flared. Dominic was walking into an ambush, believing he was hunting a rat, while the rat had set a trap with outside muscle.
“Take me to the harbor,” Nora ordered, her voice cutting through the guards' protests like steel.
“Ms. Hayes, Dominic gave explicit orders—”
“Dominic is walking into a trap because of me!” Nora snapped, turning to face Marcus with a fierce, unyielding glare. “If you leave me at a safehouse while he fights my battles, I will walk out the front door and go there myself. Now, do you want me secure in the back of your armored SUV while you drive me straight to him, or do I have to flag down a cab?”
May you like
Marcus stared at her for two seconds, recognizing the exact same stubborn, unbreakable fire that Dominic possessed. A grim, respectful smile touched the corner of the guard’s mouth.
“Suit up, team,” Marcus muttered into his tactical radio. “We’re heading for the harbor.”
