Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

Over the next three weeks, the atmosphere in the Whitmore estate shifted from tense estrangement to a quiet, tentative warmth. Christopher began coming home early from the office. For the first time in his life, dinner was not eaten in grim silence over financial reports; Florence laughed as Hannah recounted stories from her nursing school days, and Christopher found himself smiling genuinely for the first time in years.

Yet, beyond the estate gates, a storm was brewing.

Julian had been working behind the scenes. Anonymous tips began leaking to high-society tabloids: *Billionaire Whitmore Family Harboring Fraudulent Maid Turned Heiress.* Rumors questioned Florence’s mental competency, suggesting an elder abuse investigation might be warranted.

One afternoon, Christopher returned home to find two men in dark suits standing in the foyer alongside a tearful Hannah.

"What is the meaning of this?" Christopher demanded, striding past the butler.

"Mr. Whitmore," one of the men said, flashing a private investigator badge. "We've been hired by members of the board to conduct a due diligence audit regarding estate security. A significant asset has gone missing from Mrs. Florence Whitmore’s personal safe."

Christopher’s eyes flashed with anger. "Get out of my house before I have you arrested for trespassing."

"We were authorized by Mr. Julian Vance, acting as co-executor of the family heritage trust," the investigator said calmly. "The item in question is the Duchess Sapphire necklace—valued at 2.4 million dollars. And according to staff logs, the only person who accessed Mrs. Florence's room during the safe's maintenance yesterday was Miss Hannah Miller."

Hannah took a step back, her face pale. "I didn't touch her safe! Grandmother asked me to get her cardigan from the wardrobe. I didn't even know there was a safe behind the mirror!"

"Of course you didn't," Julian’s voice drifted down from the sweeping staircase. He descended slowly, wearing a look of practiced sorrow. "It’s always the innocent ones, isn't it? Christopher, be reasonable. She lived in poverty her entire life. Two million dollars is enough to set her up forever. You can't blame a stray dog for stealing meat when you leave the butcher shop open."

"Shut up, Julian," Christopher growled.

"Search her room," Julian told the investigators. "If she's innocent, she has nothing to hide. Or are you going to let family sentiment blind you to an obvious crime?"

Hannah looked at Christopher, her hazel eyes pleading, searching his face for any flicker of doubt. Christopher saw the ghost of Clara in her eyes—the same look Clara had given their father years ago when she was falsely accused of dishonoring the family.

"Go ahead and search," Christopher said coldly, looking directly at Julian. "Search every inch of this house. But understand this, Julian: when you find nothing, you will answer to me."
