Chapter 7 - Desperate Measures

By noon, the drama on the bluff had turned into an absolute spectacle.

Two moving vans, hastily dispatched by Marcus Vance, were parked outside, frantically loading designer wardrobe trunks, golf clubs, and artwork under the watchful eyes of four sheriff’s deputies.

Arthur Vance Sr. and his wife had retreated into their luxury sedan, making furious phone calls with the windows rolled up. Even from twenty yards away, I could see Arthur Vance slamming his hand against the steering wheel, his face purple with rage.

I stood on the expansive back deck, leaning against the cedar railing, listening to the gentle crash of the lake waves against the rocks below. The breeze was crisp and clean. The house behind me was silent, cavernous, and entirely mine.

The front gates buzzed. Malcolm checked his tablet and frowned. "Julian. You might want to come inside. Your sister is here."

I walked through the open glass patio doors into the foyer just as Belle came storming through the front entrance, completely ignoring the deputies who reached out to stop her.

"Let her in, Lieutenant," I said quietly.

Belle looked completely unhinged. Her designer hair was a tangled mess, her eyes were swollen and bloodshot, and she wasn't wearing makeup. She was gripping her phone so hard her knuckles were white.

"Julian!" she screamed, rushing toward me before stopping abruptly three feet away, terrified of my cold expression. "You have to stop this! You have to stop this right now!"

"Stop what, Belle?"

"Richard just called me!" she wailed, tears streaming down her cheeks. "His brother called him screaming! Marcus Vance is threatening to pull all funding from our firm, and Richard said... he said the engagement is off! He said his family will never associate with criminals and grifters! He blocked my number, Julian! He blocked my number!"

"Imagine that," I replied, crossing my arms. "Actions having consequences."

"You ruined my life!" she lunged forward, trying to slap me, but Lieutenant Miller instantly grabbed her wrist and twisted her arm behind her back, forcing her toward the wall.

"Step back, ma'am! Hands where I can see them!"

"No, wait! Julian, please!" Belle sobbed, writhing against the officer's grip. "They're raiding Dad's office right now! The FBI and the state police are seizing the computers! Mom is having a nervous breakdown in the bedroom! If you don't drop the civil claim, Dad is going to prison for twenty years! We'll lose the house in Highland Park! We'll lose everything!"

I walked over until I was staring directly into her tear-streaked face.

"When I was twenty-two, Belle, I spent four days in the hospital with pneumonia," I said, my voice dangerously calm. "Do you remember that?"

She sniffled, blinking through her tears, confused.

"I didn't have insurance because Dad kicked me off the family policy," I continued. "The bill was eleven thousand dollars. I called you from the hospital bed. I begged you for five hundred dollars to buy the antibiotics they wouldn't release to me without a copay. Do you remember what you told me?"

Belle’s lips trembled. She swallowed hard, unable to meet my eyes.

"You told me that you were trying to manifest wealth and abundance," I whispered, "and that my 'poverty mindset' was toxic to your social energy. You told me not to call you again until I had something of value to offer. And then you hung up."

"Julian... I was stupid... I was young..."

"You were twenty-four, Belle. You weren't a child. You were an adult who watched her brother slowly freeze to death so you could wear Chanel to country club brunches."

I nodded to Lieutenant Miller. "Remove her from my property, Officer. And add a formal criminal trespass warning to her record."

"No! Julian! You can't do this to your own sister!" Belle shrieked as Miller marched her toward the door. "Dad has something on you! He warned you! There are things you don't know! Julian! JULIAN!"

Her screams echoed down the marble hallway until the heavy walnut door clicked shut.

Silence returned to the house.

Malcolm walked up beside me, adjusting his glasses. "She wasn't entirely bluffing about one thing, Julian."

I turned to him. "What do you mean?"

"The forensic accounting team just finished imaging Arthur’s primary desktop before the authorities seized the physical drives. There are encrypted files on his private server. Files that don't belong to the real estate firm."

Malcolm opened his briefcase and pulled out a small black flash drive.

"What's on it?" I asked.

May you like

"Secrets," Malcolm said grimly. "Secrets your father kept locked away long before you graduated college. Secrets about who you really are."
