Chapter 10 - The Montauk Shadow

The rain followed them all the way out to the eastern tip of Long Island.
By 3:00 AM, the storm had transformed into a howling nor'easter. The Atlantic Ocean crashed violently against the wooden pilings of the Montauk marina, throwing plumes of white, freezing foam into the pitch-black air. Ethan’s black SUV pulled onto the gravel staging area two hundred yards from the private slips, its headlights completely extinguished.
Beside Ethan, Isabella checked the chamber of a compact semi-automatic pistol, slid the slide back with a sharp mechanical *clack*, and tucked it into her shoulder holster beneath her dark storm jacket.
"The local harbor patrol has been ordered to stay clear," Isabella reported, looking through a pair of thermal night-vision binoculars. "Sterling’s influence reaches deep out here. That tactical team isn't private security—they’re former black-ops contractors operating under an off-the-books LLC called Aegis Global."
Ethan adjusted the focus of his own thermal scope. Through the sleet and darkness, the sleek, hundred-foot silhouette of the *Vindication* rose and fell with the surging tide. On deck, three distinct heat signatures moved with disciplined, military precision. Two were patrolling the forward deck, while a third was positioned on the flybridge, scanning the perimeter with a high-intensity spotlight that hadn't yet been switched on.
"They haven't found the safe yet," Ethan observed, tracking the movement of a fourth heat signature deep within the hull, near the master stateroom. "They’re searching methodically. Tearing up the panels."
"We can't wait for federal backup," Isabella said, her voice taut with adrenaline. "If they find that analog tape, they'll incinerate it on the spot. We lose our only direct link to Sterling."
"We don't need backup," Ethan said coldly. He reached into the backseat and grabbed a tactical breaching kit and an electronic frequency jammer. "Chad designed that yacht using my father’s structural patents. He thought he upgraded the master security matrix, but the auxiliary fire-suppression override runs through an analog valve in the engine room hatch right above the waterline."
Isabella looked at him, a fierce spark of admiration cutting through her professional veneer. "You're going in through the sea chest."
"I know this hull better than the men tearing it apart," Ethan said, pulling on a pair of reinforced tactical gloves. "Keep the SUV running. The moment I trip the master fire suppression system, the entire lower deck will be flooded with non-toxic Halon gas. The contractors inside will have forty seconds to evacuate before they lose consciousness. That's when we take the bridge."
Ethan slipped out into the biting rain, moving like a phantom along the wooden boardwalk of the private marina. He kept low, using the stacked lobster traps and fiberglass maintenance sheds as cover. The wind wailed through the rigging of the tied-up sailboats, masking the soft sound of his boots against the wet timber.
Reaching the edge of Slip 14, Ethan lowered himself into the freezing seawater without a sound. The shock of the icy ocean bit into his skin, but his focus was absolute. He swam under the stern of the *Vindication*, pulling himself along the slick fiberglass hull until he reached the recessed emergency maintenance latch beneath the swim platform.
He pulled the lever. The seal broke with a quiet click. Ethan hauled himself up into the auxiliary engine compartment, dripping wet, breathing silently through his nose.
The deep rumble of the auxiliary generator masked his entrance. Ahead of him, through the narrow access corridor, he could hear the muffled thuds of crowbars smashing through high-end mahogany cabinetry in the stateroom.
"Nothing here!" a gruff voice shouted above the hum of the engine. "Check the sub-floor beneath the king mattress! The boss said the tape is wrapped in lead lining!"
Ethan didn't hesitate. He pulled the manual Halon override lever on the primary bulkheading wall.
A shrill, piercing alarm instantly split the air.
*WARNING: HALON DISCHARGE IN TEN SECONDS. EVACUATE LOWER DECKS.*
"What the hell is that?!"
Before the contractors could react, thick, white fire-suppression gas erupted from the ceiling vents with a deafening hiss. Panic instantly erupted in the corridor. Heavy boots scrambled against the deck as the men choked, their flashlights swinging wildly through the blinding white fog.
Ethan slipped his tactical respirator over his face, stepped out of the engine room, and moved forward like a shadow through the mist.
The first contractor, blinded by the gas and coughing violently, stumbled straight into Ethan's path. Ethan stepped inside the man's reach, seized his tactical vest, and drove his knee upward into the man's solar plexus, sweeping his legs out from under him in one fluid, devastating motion. The contractor hit the floorboards hard, unconscious before he could draw his weapon.
The second man turned, raising a carbine, but Ethan was already on him. Ethan grabbed the barrel of the weapon, forcing it toward the ceiling as a single stray shot blew through the wood paneling above. Ethan drove an open-palm strike straight into the contractor's throat, followed by a vicious hook to the jaw that sent the man crashing backward into the shattered remains of the wardrobe.
The lower deck went silent, save for the hissing of the gas vents.
Ethan dropped to his knees beside the exposed sub-floor beneath the bed. There, precisely where Chad had confessed, sat a heavy, fireproof steel box bolted directly through the structural stringers of the hull.
Ethan pulled out the electronic decoder Isabella had prepared, slapped the magnetic leads onto the digital keypad, and let the decryption software cycle through the factory override codes.
*CLICK.*
The heavy lid swung open. Inside lay an unlabelled, heavy-duty magnetic cassette tape sealed in a clear, anti-static plastic sleeve, alongside an offshore banking ledger stamped with the official wax seal of the Sterling Financial Trust.
Ethan grabbed the evidence, slipping it into his waterproof inner pocket.
Above him, the sound of heavy footsteps sprinted toward the main deck. A voice roared over the sound of the wind outside: "They're inside! Sink the boat! Cut the fuel lines and burn it to the dock!"
May you like
Ethan's eyes hardened. He drew his weapon, racked the slide, and headed for the stairs leading up to the stormy deck.
