Chapter 7 - THE UNRAVELING OF ELEANOR

When a empire built on appearances collapses, it doesn't crumble slowly. It implodes.

Without me in the house to pay half the electric bill, buy the weekly groceries, clean the rooms, and run the errands, the reality of my mother’s financial situation began to surface.

For years, my mother had maintained the illusion of suburban wealth by quietly draining the remaining balance of my father's life insurance policy while using my monthly rent contributions to cover her credit card minimums.

With Kayla suspended from her job, my mother facing thousands of dollars in legal retainer fees, and my four hundred dollars a month gone, the foundation dissolved.

On Friday morning, I received an official notification from the County Probate Court.

Because I was listed as the secondary executor of my father’s estate—a detail my mother had forgotten when she tried to hide his financial records three years ago—I was copied on an emergency motion filed by M&T Bank.

My mother’s house was ninety days delinquent on its second mortgage. A Notice of Default had been formally issued.

I sat at my kitchen table in the cottage, sipping coffee, reading the document.

The house on Elm Street—the grand, four-bedroom suburban home my mother used as her primary status symbol—was going into foreclosure.

Ten minutes later, my phone chimed with an email from Detective Miller.

“Hannah, just updating you. The Assistant DA has rejected the defense’s motion for a plea bargain. The State is moving forward with full felony charges for both defendants. Trial date is set for October 14th.”

I set my mug down, looking out the window at the morning sunlight hitting the oak tree in the yard.

They had thought I was the weak link in the family. They had thought that because I was quiet, because I was recovering from a bad divorce, because I had accepted their shelter for a year, I was a victim to be picked apart.

They hadn't realized that quiet people aren't weak.

We're just waiting until the evidence is complete.
