Chapter 4 - THE SHATTERED HOUSEHOLD

Two days later, I was discharged from the hospital.

I wore a sleek, black medical eye patch over my left eye, a dark trench coat, and carried a simple leather bag. Kira picked me up in her sedan and drove me straight to the university’s private faculty housing, where Dr. Reeves had arranged a secure, rent-free apartment for me until the trial concluded.

The story had exploded.

What my father had assumed would be a "quiet family matter" had become a national news headline. A local investigative reporter had obtained a copy of the police report and the arrest warrants.

VALEDICTORIAN ASSAULTED BY MOTHER AFTER GRADUATION Prominent Local Businessman Arrested for Perjury and Accessory to Felony Battery.

On Friday morning, I sat at the kitchen table of my new apartment, drinking tea with Arthur Vance and my court-appointed victim advocate, a sharp woman named Elena Rostova.

"The grand jury met yesterday," Elena informed me, setting three thick folders on the table. "They returned a full indictment on all counts."

"What are the specifics?" I asked.

"Denise Mercer is indicted on one count of First-Degree Aggravated Battery, one count of Assault with a Deadly Weapon, and one count of Child/Dependent Abuse," Elena read. "Because of the permanent loss of sight, the state is seeking a mandatory sentence of eight to fifteen years in state prison."

I took a slow sip of tea. "And Warren?"

"Warren Mercer is indicted on one count of Accessory After the Fact to a Violent Felony, one count of Felony Perjury, and one count of Filing False Official Documents," Elena continued. "He was arrested at his office yesterday afternoon in front of his entire corporate staff."

A quiet satisfaction bloomed in my chest. My father had spent thirty years cultivating an image of a respectable, high-society suburban patriarch. He had been hauled out of his corner office in handcuffs while his employees watched.

"What about their finances?" I asked.

Arthur Vance picked up the second folder. "That’s where things get interesting. Warren tried to transfer fifty percent of his corporate stock into Colin’s name last night to protect it from civil attachment."

"Is that legal?"

"It’s a fraudulent conveyance," Vance chuckled dryly. "The state prosecutor caught it within twenty minutes. A judge has placed a full freeze on all of Warren and Denise Mercer’s personal and corporate assets. They can no longer access their savings, their home equity line, or their investment accounts without court approval."

"So how are they paying their lawyers?" Kira asked from the counter.

"They aren't," Vance replied. "Their private defense attorney withdrew this morning due to non-payment. As of 9:00 AM today, Denise and Warren Mercer are being represented by public defenders."

I sat back in my chair, looking out the window at the green leaves of the campus trees.

They had spent twenty-three years making sure I felt small, helpless, and destitute. They had deprived me of resources, ridiculed my ambition, and tried to strip me of my degree.

Now, my mother was sitting in a county jail cell in an orange jumpsuit. My father was facing criminal charges and corporate bankruptcy. And Colin was left standing in their empty, six-bedroom suburban house, unable to access a single dollar of the family money he had relied on his entire life.

"There's one more thing, Ms. Mercer," Elena said softly.

"What?"

"Colin Mercer has requested an emergency meeting with you. He claims he has evidence that could help your civil case against your father."

I looked at Elena. "Colin wants to betray our father?"

"Colin wants to survive," Elena corrected. "And right now, you hold the only life raft in the family."
