Chapter 9 - The Truth in the Locket

Down in the fortified stone cellar beneath the manor, the thick steel vault door unlocked with a heavy hydraulic hiss.

Lucy and Sarah were sitting on an antique velvet sofa under the low brick arches, wrapped in wool blankets. Scout immediately rose, his tail wagging when he caught Vincent’s scent.

"It’s over upstairs," Vincent said, stepping into the warm room. He had washed his hands and changed his coat; there was no sign of blood or violence on him. "You’re safe."

Sarah let out a long, ragged breath, burying her face in her hands. Lucy ran straight to Vincent, wrapping her small arms around his waist. Scout pressed his head against Vincent's leg, letting out a soft, contented sigh.

Vincent placed his large hand gently on Lucy’s hair. For the first time in five years, the cold knot of grief in his chest began to loosen.

"Marco has the files ready," Vincent told Sarah. "We need the final sector of the compass locket."

Sarah nodded, wiping her cheeks. She unclasped the silver compass from her neck and handed it to Vincent. "David told me that when the compass points true north, the internal hinge releases."

They walked back up to the library. Marco took the silver compass with delicate tweezers. Using a small magnetic wand, he spun the tiny antique needle until it locked firmly at ninety degrees. With a faint click, the silver casing parted, revealing an ultrathin micro-transceiver etched with pure gold circuits.

Marco inserted it into the master terminal alongside the hexagonal cipher from Scout’s collar.

The main wall screen blinked twice, then flashed black. A video file labeled *RECORDING_04_HAYES_FINAL* opened automatically.

A man’s face filled the screen. He was thirty-five, with kind hazel eyes identical to Lucy’s, wearing wire-rimmed glasses and a rumpled white shirt. He looked exhausted, but his gaze was steady and fierce.

"If anyone is watching this," David Hayes' recorded voice echoed through the high-ceilinged room, "it means Julian Vance found me. But it also means my daughter Lucy and my wife Sarah survived."

Sarah choked back a sob, gripping Lucy’s shoulders. Lucy stared at the screen, her eyes wide. "Daddy..."

"Vincent Moretti," David Hayes said directly into the camera, as if looking through the lens into the very room. "I know this file reached you because only your encrypted syndicate frequencies could crack the secondary lock. I am sorry I couldn't stop them on the Dan Ryan five years ago. I was too weak. Too afraid. I watched Vance order the kill on your family from the server room, and I did nothing."

David leaned closer to the camera. "I couldn't bring Clara and Leo back. But I spent the last five years compiling every crime, every murder, every offshore account Vance ever touched. Everything is on this drive. It is enough to send him to federal prison for three lifetimes, or enough for you to end him on the docks. Whatever you choose, Moretti... protect my little girl. She was the only reason I didn't pull the trigger on myself five years ago."

The screen faded to black.

Lucy looked up at Vincent. Her little voice broke the heavy silence of the library. "Daddy said you were a strong man. He said you would make sure the bad people stopped chasing us."

Vincent knelt down before Lucy Hayes. He reached into his coat pocket and withdrew his family’s gold signet ring—the ring of the Moretti patriarch that had been passed down for four generations. He pressed it into Lucy’s small, warm palm and closed her fingers around it.

"Your daddy was the bravest man I ever knew, Lucy," Vincent said, his voice thick with uncharacteristic emotion. "And as long as I draw breath, no one will ever harm you again. You are under my house now."

He stood up, turned to Frank, and his voice turned back to pure, unyielding steel.
