Chapter 10 - A Brand New Dawn

Three months later, the early spring sun poured over the rolling green pastures of an eighty-acre horse ranch on the outskirts of the state.

David stood on the wooden porch of their new home, holding a warm mug of coffee. In the distance, Lily was running across the lush grass, laughing delightedly as an adopted golden retriever puppy chased her sparkling sneakers.

The Hawthorne family trust had been completely dissolved. Clara’s rightful forty percent share—amounting to tens of millions of dollars—had been placed into a protected trust fund for Lily's future education and welfare. David had taken only enough to purchase this modest, peaceful ranch, far away from the toxic vanity of the city, and invested the rest into a charitable foundation in Clara’s name dedicated to protecting abused and underprivileged children.

Eleanor had been sentenced to house arrest and financial forfeiture, living alone in a tiny condo after the grand Hawthorne manor was seized and liquidated. Victoria had accepted a plea deal that would keep her behind bars for the next five years.

Marcus walked up the porch steps, carrying a leather envelope under his arm, smiling as he watched Lily play in the yard.

"She looks happy, David," Marcus said softly.

"She is happy," David replied, a genuine smile gracing his face for the first time in years. "She wakes up without nightmares now. She knows she’s safe."

"You did good, David. Clara would be beyond proud of the way you fought for her."

David looked down at his right hand. The calluses from years of hard manual labor were still there, but the rage that had fueled him that dark night had finally vanished, replaced by an unbreakable sense of purpose. "I just did what any father would do. When you love your child, there's no room for fear."

Lily ran up to the porch, out of breath and grinning from ear to ear, holding up a small bouquet of freshly picked wild yellow daisies. "Look, Daddy! For Mommy’s bedside picture!"

David knelt down, taking the flowers and kissing her forehead. "They’re beautiful, monkey. Go put them in the vase inside."

Lily giggled and darted into the house, the puppy barking playfully at her heels.
