Chapter 11 - The Shadow at the Gates

The banquet had ended hours ago, leaving the estate wrapped in the heavy, ominous quiet of 2:00 AM.
The guests had dispersed in terrified silence, the traitorous captains scattering to their territories like rats sensing a sinking ship. But Mateo Falcone had left early, slipping through the mansion gates with a panicked look that Lorenzo’s scouts had tracked every mile back to Brooklyn.
In the master suite, Nora couldn't sleep.
The adrenaline from the evening still coursed through her veins. She had washed off the makeup, changed into a soft, oversized gray sweater and leggings, and quietly walked out onto the private second-floor conservatory overlooking the estate's sprawling snowy gardens.
The glass dome above revealed a sky full of cold winter stars. Snow was beginning to fall again, thick white flakes dusting the tall wrought-iron perimeter walls.
"You should be resting, Nora."
She gasped, spinning around, but relaxed when she saw Lorenzo stepping out from the shadows of the arched doorway. He had shed his tuxedo jacket and bow tie, his white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, a crystal glass of whiskey in his hand.
"I tried to sleep," Nora confessed softly, wrapping her arms around her stomach. "Every time I close my eyes, I feel like I'm going to wake up in that freezing attic bedroom with Mrs. Gable screaming at me. I feel like this is all a dream."
Lorenzo walked to the edge of the glass terrace, stopping beside her. He looked down at the soft curve of her belly, his eyes softening in a way no capo in New York would ever believe possible.
"It's not a dream," Lorenzo said quietly. "You're safe here. My father was serious tonight, Nora. You never have to fear being abandoned again. Neither you, nor your baby."
Nora looked down, her chest aching with an emotion she had never dared to entertain. "Lorenzo... you don't even know who fathered this child. He was a coward who ran when things got tough. You have no reason to burden yourself with another man's responsibility."
Lorenzo set his whiskey glass on the stone balustrade and turned to face her fully. He reached out, his warm, rough fingertips gently tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. The intensity in his gray eyes was breathtaking.
"A father isn't the man who plants the seed and runs like a dog," Lorenzo whispered, his voice low, thick with raw conviction. "A father is the man who bleeds for that child, who builds a fortress around them, who slaughters monsters to keep them safe. If you let me, Nora... that child will carry the Moretti name. And no one will ever dare call them a burden."
Nora’s breath caught in her throat. Her heart hammered against her chest. "Lorenzo... do you mean that?"
Lorenzo stepped closer, closing the distance between them until Nora could feel the radiant heat of his body. His hand gently rested over her stomach, right where the baby gave a sudden, firm kick against his palm.
A rare, breathtaking smile broke across Lorenzo's stoic face.
Before he could speak, a deafening explosion shattered the midnight silence.
*BOOM!*
The glass dome of the conservatory violently rattled. Out in the courtyard, five hundred yards away, the heavy iron front gates of the estate were blasted off their hinges in a blinding ball of orange fire and black smoke.
Instantly, all the lights across the massive mansion cut out, plunging the estate into pitch-black darkness.
The emergency red backup sirens began to scream.
"Get down!" Lorenzo roared, instantly throwing his massive frame over Nora, shielding her entirely with his body as automatic gunfire erupted like rolling thunder across the courtyard below.
Bullets shredded through the decorative trees and shattered the lower windows of the foyer. Screams and gunshots from Moretti sentries echoed through the night.
Lorenzo reached behind his back, drawing a black customized 9mm pistol from his waistband. His face had transformed back into the terrifying demon who ruled New York's underworld.
The conservatory doors burst open. Giovanni’s chief of security, bleeding heavily from a gunshot wound to his shoulder, stumbled in, his gun drawn.
"Boss! Don Giovanni is secured in the panic room!" the guard gasped, coughing up blood. "It's the Falcones! They allied with the Chicago syndicate—they brought fifty heavily armed mercenaries with night vision! They've breached the courtyard!"
"Hold the stairwells!" Lorenzo commanded, his voice cold as liquid nitrogen. "I'll take Nora to the vault."
"Boss... there's something else," the guard choked out, his eyes wide with absolute dread as he looked between Lorenzo and Nora.
Lorenzo turned, his grip tightening on his weapon. "What?"
"The man leading the mercenary strike squad at the front door... he's shouting her name," the guard whispered, pointing a trembling hand at Nora. "He claims he's Nora's baby's father—and he's come to take what’s his."
Nora’s heart stopped.

Through the shattered glass of the conservatory, the harsh glare of tactical flashlights swept across the snow, illuminating a tall, heavily armed man walking through the burning gates, flanked by twenty masked shooters.
Nora looked down into the courtyard—and a scream of sheer terror died in her throat.
