Chapter 11 - The Uninvited Guest

The sun had completely set, casting the private sitting room in a warm, amber glow.

Marin sat on the velvet sofa, holding the phone against her ear with both hands, tears of pure joy streaming down her cheeks.

*"Marin...?"* Posie’s tiny, groggy voice came through the speaker. *"The doctor said... my heart works now. He gave me a stuffed bear with a red bow."*

"I know, baby," Marin sobbed, smiling through her tears. "I know. You're going to run in the park this summer. I promise you."

*"When are you coming home?"*

Marin looked up. Damian stood across the room by the fireplace, watching her in silence, a rare softness lingering in the lines of his handsome face. He had saved her sister's life. He had torn down an entire criminal empire just to settle a debt of honor she hadn't even known she was owed.

"Soon, sweetheart. Rest now. I love you," Marin whispered before hanging up.

She stood, clutching the phone to her chest, and walked toward Damian. For the first time, she didn't bow her head. She looked him straight in the eyes.

"Thank you," she said, her voice thick with emotion. "I will spend the rest of my life repaying this debt, Mr. Hail. Anything you ask."

Damian stepped forward, closing the distance between them until Marin could smell the dark cedar and smoke clinging to his collar. He reached up, his warm, scarred fingers gently tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear.

"You don't owe me a thing, Marin," he murmured, his thumb brushing lightly across her cheekbone. "Your father, Arthur Ross... he was the captain who pulled me out of the burning wreckage in Boston twelve years ago. He died saving my life. I’ve spent ten years searching for his daughters."

Marin’s breath hitched in her throat, shock rendering her speechless. Her father—a man she thought had vanished in an industrial accident—had been Damian’s savior.

"You are never returning to the shadows," Damian said, his voice deep, possessive, and strikingly intimate. "You belong here."

His hand moved down to cup the nape of her neck, pulling her gently toward him. Marin’s heart raced, not with fear, but with a wild, breathtaking electricity. Her eyes fluttered shut as his lips hovered just inches from hers—

*BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.*

A high-pitched, frantic alarm shattered the silence.

The estate’s emergency red lights instantly bathed the room in crimson. Downstairs, the sharp, percussive blast of a shotgun tore through the stillness of the night, followed by the sickening crunch of metal.

Damian pulled away instantly, his gun drawn from his holster in a fraction of a second, thrusting Marin behind his broad frame.

The private study’s monitors flickered violently, switching to the estate’s security feed.

The perimeter gates were flattened. Laying on the lawn were six of Damian’s elite guards, motionless.

Standing in the center of the crushed gates, illuminated by the red flare lights, was a tall figure wrapped in a soot-stained trench coat, carrying a military detonator in one hand and a combat blade dripping with fresh blood in the other.

The figure tilted his head toward the surveillance camera, pulling down his mask.

Damian’s knuckles turned bone-white against his weapon, his breath catching in genuine, disbelieving horror.

"Impossible..." Damian whispered.

The man on the screen was Damian’s older brother—the brother Damian had buried with his own hands six years ago. And pinned to the dead man's chest was a handwritten note scrawled in red paint:

*I’VE COME FOR THE MAID.*
