Chapter 4 - Secrets in the Cellar

The rain had turned into a relentless downpour by the time the three black Suburbans pulled onto Maple Street in Brooklyn. The street was lined with modest brownstones and old oak trees, a stark contrast to the fortified high-rise penthouses where Luca ran his empire.

Luca had bought this house when he was twenty-four, before the bloodshed, before the title of Don was thrust upon him. It was where he and Elena had brought Emily home in a pink blanket.

The iron gate hung off its hinges. The front door’s deadbolt had been forced, splintering the aged white pine.

Luca pulled a customized .45 from his shoulder holster, his men fanning out through the front lawn with suppressed rifles. "Santino, flank the perimeter. Nobody enters or leaves."

"Understood, Boss."

Luca stepped over the threshold, his flashlight cutting through the dust and rain-scented shadows. Emily stayed close behind his broad shoulder, her hand clutching his sleeve. Seeing the house ransacked broke her heart. Elena’s porcelain tea sets lay shattered on the rug; framed family photos were stomped into shards.

"They were desperate," Luca whispered, his teeth grinding.

They descended the narrow basement stairs. The basement smelled of damp concrete and old memories. Luca pointed his flashlight past the dormant furnace, toward a wall of aged red bricks. Behind a rusted iron panel, completely invisible to anyone who didn't know the house's blueprints, stood a heavy dark-green iron safe, disguised as an ancient circuit box.

"Here," Emily whispered, stepping forward.

Her hand trembled as she held up the small brass clover key. She inserted it into the tiny seam beneath the fake meter dial.

The heavy plate swung open with a dull metallic groan.

Inside rested a leather-bound journal, a black velvet pouch, and a series of encrypted USB thumb drives tied to legal deeds. But resting right on top was a manila folder with Luca’s name written in Elena’s unmistakable, delicate cursive.

Luca reached in, his fingers shaking as he touched his late wife's handwriting after all these years. He opened the folder under the beam of the flashlight.

Attached to the first page was an autopsy report. And beneath it, a confidential toxicology analysis dated two months before Elena passed away.

Emily watched her father’s face turn from pale to ghostly white. His pupils dilated in sheer shock.

"Dad?" Emily whispered, terrified by the sudden tremor in his powerful frame. "What does it say?"

Luca didn't speak. He turned the page. Stapled to the medical records were high-resolution photographs taken by a private investigator: Salvatore Bellini meeting secretly with a corrupt pharmacist, handing over unmarked vials of synthetic arsenic.

And beside the photographs was a handwritten note from Elena:

*Luca, if you are reading this, I am already gone. The cancer was real, but my sudden decline was not. Salvatore Bellini has been poisoning my medication to weaken you. And his daughter Vanessa has been groomed since childhood to take my place beside you. Protect our daughter. Do not trust the Bellinis.*
