Chapter 2 - Out of the Shadows

The raw chill of the crawlspace surged up into the lavish living room like breath from an open grave. David didn’t hesitate. He dropped the heavy brass poker onto the ruined Persian rug and dropped to his knees, plunging both hands into the splintered opening.

“Leo!” The name ripped from his chest, raw and ragged.

The tiny hand clung to his wrist with an astonishing, desperate strength. David gripped the child’s forearm, feeling the fragile bones beneath dirt-crusted skin. Carefully, bracing his knees against the jagged edges of the floorboards, he hauled upward. The child came out of the dark like a specter, covered in fine yellow insulation fibers and gray cobwebs. His oversized t-shirt was gray with grime, his bare legs scraped and bruised, his sunken cheeks hollowed by days of starvation.

David pulled the boy entirely onto the polished hardwood and crushed him against his chest. Leo buried his face into the crook of David’s neck, shaking so violently that his teeth clicked together. He smelled of mildew, stagnant air, and profound terror.

“I got you, buddy. Daddy’s got you,” David sobbed, his own tears washing clean tracks down the boy’s filthy cheek. “You’re safe. You’re out.”

Behind him, Maya let out a wail that seemed to release all the agony she had bottled up. She threw herself across the floor, wrapping her small arms around both David and her brother. “I told you!” she wept into Leo’s tangled hair. “I heard you tapping! I told Daddy!”

Across the room, pressed against the white marble fireplace, Elena looked like a statue caught mid-collapse. Her manicured hands were clamped over her mouth, her eyes darting frantically toward the front foyer, then toward the shattered floor.

“Elena, look at me!” David roared, turning his head, his vision blurred with rage. “Look at your nephew! You told me he wandered off at the park! You organized the search parties! You stood beside me on the evening news and cried on camera!”

“David, you don't understand,” Elena whispered, her voice trembling so badly the words were barely audible. “You have to get him out of here right now. He wasn’t supposed to be here today. If Julian comes back—”

“Julian?” David’s blood ran ice-cold. Julian was Elena’s husband, a high-profile corporate defense attorney with a reputation for ruthless efficiency and influential political ties. “What does Julian have to do with this?”

Before Elena could answer, the electronic chime of the front door’s smart lock trilled softly through the silent house.
