Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Bennetts

The moment Richard moved toward Emily, the room descended into controlled chaos.
Detective Hayes didn't hesitate. He grabbed Richard’s outstretched arm, twisted it behind his back with military precision, and drove the young man face-first into the hardwood floor beside the sweetheart table. The crash of fine china and glasses shattering echoed through the hall as Richard’s body hit the boards.
"Get off me! Dad! Dad, do something!" Richard shrieked, his cheek pressed flat against the spilled wine.
"Richard Bennett, you are under arrest for felony domestic violence, assault, and battery," Hayes announced, his knee planted firmly between Richard's shoulder blades.
The cold *click-click* of stainless steel handcuffs snapping shut around Richard’s wrists sounded like thunder in the dead-quiet ballroom.
"Don't you dare touch my son!" Harold Bennett roared, finally snapping out of his daze. He lunged toward the officers, his face purple with apoplectic fury. "I will have your badge for this, Hayes! I will call the governor! I will burn your precinct to the ground!"
"I wouldn't advise making threats to law enforcement, Harold," Daniel Vance intervened, stepping smoothly between Harold and the arresting officers. "Especially not while state financial regulators are parked outside your home."
Harold froze, his chest heaving. "What did you say?"
"You didn't think we only looked into your son's personal life, did you?" Daniel asked with a grim smile. "When Carter Holdings approved that four-million-dollar emergency capital infusion, our forensic analysts conducted a deep-dive audit of Bennett Construction’s general ledger. We discovered twenty-two counts of public contract fraud, falsified safety certifications on the county bridge project, and over six million dollars diverted into unauthorized offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands."
Daniel handed a crisp blue folder directly to Detective Hayes’s partner.
"The state attorney general signed the warrants forty-five minutes ago, Mr. Bennett," Daniel continued. "The IRS has already placed federal liens on your home, your vehicles, and every corporate account associated with your name. By midnight, you won't have enough credit to buy a cup of coffee."
Evelyn Bennett let out a strangled wail and collapsed into an empty chair, clutching her pearl necklace as if it were an oxygen mask. "No... no, this is impossible. We are the Bennetts! We run this city!"
"You ran a criminal racket disguised as a family business," I told her, walking past her without a second glance. "And you raised a violent, cowardly predator. You enabled him, Evelyn. You applauded him when he bragged about hurting my daughter. You told me it was an 'executive temperament.'"
I stood over Richard, who was being hauled to his feet by two burly officers. His hair was disheveled, his tuxedo ruined with red wine, his eyes wild and bloodshot with rage and humiliation. The eighty high-society guests he had sought to impress were watching him with looks of sheer disgust. Several were recording the entire scene on their smartphones.
"Margaret... please," Richard gasped, struggling against the cuffs. "Emily... talk to her! You can't let them take me to jail! It'll ruin my career! It'll ruin everything!"
Emily walked over, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with me. She looked at the man who had terrorized her for over a year, who had convinced her she was worthless, who had made her believe she was entirely alone in the world.
She reached down, took hold of the massive diamond engagement ring on her left finger, and twisted it off.
"Your career is already over, Richard," Emily said softly.
She dropped the ring into the puddle of cheap champagne at his feet.

"Get him out of my sight," Detective Hayes ordered.
The officers dragged Richard toward the double doors. He kicked and cursed the entire way, his screams echoing down the corridor until the heavy doors slammed shut behind him.
