Chapter 6 - THE DAUGHTER'S DEFENSE

Vanessa arrived for the interview accompanied by her attorney.

She denied authorizing any improper payment.

She admitted that she had asked Northstar to prepare a corporate culture assessment before her official appointment, but she said the work had been legitimate and unrelated to the disputed invoices.

The auditors asked why her initials appeared beside a reference to a confidential arrangement.

“My initials appear on hundreds of documents,” she answered. “That doesn't prove anything.”

It was a fair point.

Evelyn insisted that the investigation distinguish between documented facts and assumptions.

The auditors eventually located the contract for Vanessa's culture assessment. It described ordinary consulting services, but the payment records contained discrepancies between the contracted amount and the sums actually transferred.

Vanessa had not signed the payment instructions.

However, someone had used an administrative account associated with her office to transmit supporting documents.

The evidence was troubling, but it remained incomplete.

Richard wanted to suspend Vanessa immediately.

Evelyn advised him to consult independent counsel and follow the company's established procedures.

“Accountability cannot depend on whether we like the person involved,” she said.

That afternoon, a financial reporter contacted Harrington Systems seeking comment on allegations of a secret investment relationship between Richard and Northstar.

Someone had leaked the incorporation documents.

Within hours, the story appeared online.

HARRINGTON SYSTEMS FACES QUESTIONS OVER MILLIONS IN CONSULTING PAYMENTS.

The article did not accuse any individual of a crime, but the headline alone caused the company's stock to fall sharply.

Employees began worrying about layoffs.

Vendors requested assurances.

Daniel's investment committee demanded an emergency briefing.

At the briefing, Richard looked exhausted.

“I've spent thirty years building this company,” he said. “I will not allow an unverified story to destroy it.”

“Then we need transparency,” Evelyn replied. “The company should release a factual statement confirming the independent review, explaining what is known, and making no unsupported claims about what isn't.”

Vanessa entered the room halfway through the discussion.

“I know who leaked the documents.”

Everyone turned toward her.

“Who?” Richard asked.

“Evelyn.”

Evelyn looked at her.

“That's a serious accusation. What evidence do you have?”

“She had access to all the records. She's been trying to force my father into a corner since she returned.”

Daniel spoke sharply.

“Do not make allegations without evidence.”

Vanessa's voice trembled.

“Everyone protects her!”

“Because she has consistently asked us to follow the evidence,” Michael Grant said. “You should try doing the same.”

Vanessa left the room.

That evening, the audit committee confirmed that the original corporate records had been obtained from public filings. The source of the accounting documents provided to the auditors was being examined separately.

There was no evidence that Evelyn had leaked the information.

The next morning, Richard made an unexpected announcement.

He would temporarily relinquish his direct oversight of the investigation and allow an independent board committee to determine the appropriate next steps.

It was the first time he had surrendered control of a major company decision without trying to dictate the outcome.

Vanessa interpreted it as a betrayal.

“You're letting strangers decide what happens to our family,” she told him.

“I'm letting independent directors decide what happens to our company.”

“You're my father!”

“And that is exactly why I should not be the person deciding whether you're held accountable.”

She stared at him.

“You would choose the company over me?”

Richard's expression broke.

“I should have taught you that loving you and holding you accountable were never opposites.”

Vanessa left before he could say more.

For several days, she did not return to headquarters.

Then, just as the audit team prepared its preliminary findings, Evelyn received a message from an unfamiliar number.

I know who used the administrative account. But if I tell you, my life will change.

Evelyn replied with a single question.

Will you speak to the independent investigators?

May you like

The answer arrived two minutes later.

Yes. Tomorrow. Alone.
