Chapter 11 - The Sealed Transmission

Forty-eight hours later, the storm had cleared over London.

The sun broke through the heavy gray clouds, casting brilliant golden beams through the floor-to-ceiling stained glass windows of the Grand Throne Room.

Duke Sterling and his conspirators were locked in maximum security, facing trial for high treason, conspiracy, and murder. Victoria had succumbed to her injuries before reaching the hospital. The kingdom was in shock, but the truth had set it free.

I stood before the full-length gilded mirror, wearing a tailored navy silk dress provided by the royal dressmakers. Margaret stood behind me, gently fastening the diamond-shaped locket around my neck.

"You look just like her, Clara," my mother whispered, her eyes shining with pride. "Your father and sister would be so proud."

A soft knock came at the door. Alexander stepped inside, holding little Oliver by the hand.

The toddler had refused to wear his formal royal shoes, running toward me in his white socks with a joyful squeal. "Clara!"

I laughed, kneeling down to catch him in a warm embrace. He wrapped his arms around my neck and gave me a sticky, sweet kiss on the cheek.

Alexander stood before me, smiling warmly. The dark shadows under his eyes had begun to lift, replaced by a peace he hadn't known in two years.

"Parliament has formally repealed the Succession Act of 1888 this morning," Alexander announced softly. "Your royal lineage has been ratified by the Supreme Court. You are officially Princess Clara of the United Kingdom."

"It still feels like a dream," I admitted, looking up at him. "A terrifying, beautiful dream."

"You don't have to go back to Baltimore, Clara," Alexander said, his voice dropping into that deep, gentle tone that made my heart race. "Oliver needs you. The people need you. And... I need you."

He offered his hand, and as I placed my fingers into his warm grasp, the future suddenly seemed bright and full of hope.

Suddenly, Julian burst into the room, his face completely pale, his hands shaking so violently he almost dropped his encrypted military tablet.

"Alexander... Clara..." Julian gasped, his voice choked with pure dread. "You need to see this. Right now."

"Julian, what is it?" Alexander frowned, stepping forward. "The Sterling faction is dismantled."

"Not them," Julian stammered, hitting play on an incoming audio transmission that had just bypassed all royal satellite firewalls. "This signal... it didn't come from London. It came from an unmarked underground clinic in the Swiss Alps. It’s encrypted with Eleanor's private personal royal cipher."

A sudden, chilling static filled the room.

Then, a weak, raspy, female voice breathed through the speaker—a voice that sounded identical to my own:

*"Alexander... Clara... if you are hearing this, they switched us before the casket closed. I’m alive... but don't trust Margaret... she isn't who you think—"*

The transmission abruptly cut off into flat, screaming static.

I slowly turned around to look at Margaret.

My mother was no longer crying. The warm, maternal smile was gone.

Instead, a chilling, cold smirk crept across her lips as she quietly slid her hand into her coat pocket.
