Chapter 7 - The Midnight Confession

The silhouette moved across the carpet with the silent, gliding grace of a serpent.
Lauren wore black silk pajamas, her platinum hair hanging loose over her shoulders. In her right hand, she carried an empty highball glass; in her left, a manila envelope.
She did not check the wingback chair in the darkened corner. Her focus was entirely on the bed, where several pillows had been arranged beneath the down comforter to mimic the shape of a sleeping body.
She walked slowly to the nightstand, checking the level of the water in the silver carafe. Seeing it half-empty, a slow, terrible smile stretched across her lips in the moonlight.
"Goodbye, Eleanor," she whispered aloud to the empty bed. "You should have signed the papers."
"Which papers, Lauren?"
The voice did not come from the bed. It came from the shadows behind her.
Lauren spun around, a sharp gasp catching in her throat. The highball glass slipped from her fingers, shattering against the base of the nightstand.
I clicked the small remote control in my hand.
The overhead chandelier blazed to life, bathing the master suite in harsh, crystalline light.
Lauren blinked against the glare, her eyes widening in absolute, paralyzing shock. I was not lying in bed, gasping for breath with a failing heart. I was standing. Standing upright on my own two feet, my back straight, my hands resting calmly on the back of the wingback chair.
"You..." Lauren stammered, stepping backward until her spine hit the mahogany bedpost. "You're... you're paralyzed. Harrison said..."
"Harrison is an incompetent fraud who took three hundred thousand dollars from your Cayman account to poison an old woman," I said, taking two slow, measured steps toward her. "The digoxin in the water, Lauren? It was a clever touch. But Rosa has lived in a country where women like you poison their rivals for sport. She recognized the signs before the first bottle was half empty."
Lauren’s panic flared into vicious rage. Her face contorted, stripping away every ounce of Park Avenue refinement. "You think you've won? You think this changes anything? Jonathan signed the guarantees! The duplex is gone! The foundation is bankrupt! If I go down, Eleanor, your precious son goes to federal prison for the rest of his miserable life!"
"Jonathan won't be going anywhere alone," Marcus’s deep voice boomed from the velvet curtains.
Marcus stepped out, followed immediately by Detective Miller, his body camera glowing with an active green LED.
"Lauren Vance," Detective Miller announced, drawing a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for attempted murder in the first degree, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud."
Lauren backed away, her hands clawing behind her against the bed frame. "No! No, this is entrapment! Julian! Julian!"
"Mr. Sterling is currently being detained in the lobby by federal agents from the SEC," Miller said calmly, closing the distance between them. "They raided his Midtown office an hour ago. Turns out Apex Holdings kept very detailed records of your text messages, Mrs. Vance. Including the ones where you promised a twenty-five-million-dollar insurance settlement upon Eleanor Vance’s death within the quarter."
"It was Jonathan!" Lauren shrieked, her voice reaching a shrill, hysterical pitch that echoed down the hallway. "Jonathan gave me the digoxin! He wanted her dead! He hated her! He told me she was ruining his life!"
The bedroom door swung wide open.
Jonathan stood in the doorway. He looked completely sober now, his face as white as chalk, his eyes bloodshot and hollow. He had heard every word.
"Jonathan," Lauren gasped, turning to him, her eyes wild with desperate calculation. "Tell them! Tell them it was your idea! You promised me we’d be free!"
Jonathan looked at his wife—the woman he had ruined himself for, the woman for whom he had forged documents and betrayed his bloodline. A single tear tracked down his pale cheek, cutting through the shame on his face.
"I loved you, Lauren," Jonathan whispered, his voice trembling with profound heartbreak. "I gave up my soul for you. And you just tried to kill my mother in her sleep."
He turned to Detective Miller, held out his unbandaged left wrist, and then his bandaged right hand.

"Arrest me, Officer," Jonathan said quietly. "I’ll tell you everything. Every bank account, every forged signature, every lie. Just get her out of my mother’s house."
