Chapter 5 - Darkness on the Dance Floor

Back at The Monarch, the air had turned venomous.

The string quartet had just been ordered to stop playing by the floor coordinator. Across the ballroom, the magnificent Austrian chandeliers—which had cast a radiant, diamond-like glow over Lauren’s imported silk table runners—suddenly flickered twice before shutting down completely.

Only the dull, low-voltage emergency sconces remained, bathing the multi-million-dollar room in a depressing, amber twilight.

Whispers exploded through the rows of tables like wildfire.

"What happened to the lights?"

"Did the power grid fail?"

"No, look at the bar. They’re packing away the Dom Pérignon!"

Julian Thorne grabbed his father’s arm as Richard paced behind the sweetheart table, wiping sweat from his forehead with a monogrammed handkerchief. "Dad, talk to the hotel management! We paid two hundred and fifty thousand dollars for this package! Why are they shutting off the bar?"

"Shut up, Julian!" Richard snapped, his face flushed with unmasked terror. "You don't understand what’s happening, you idiot! Your wife didn't just lock her deadbeat brother out of a party. She just humiliated the majority equity holder of Thorne Financial!"

Julian froze, staring at Lauren, who was clutching her bouquet so tightly that the white roses were snapping in her fists. "What is he talking about, Lauren? You said Luke was an office assistant! You said he begged you for a ticket!"

"He is an assistant!" Lauren shrieked, tears carving black trails through her foundation. "He drives an old car! He lives in a tiny condo in Fremont! He did this to spite me, Julian! He probably forged that document!"

Before Julian could answer, Marcus entered the ballroom accompanied by two imposing building guards in tailored black suits. He carried a leather-bound folio and walked straight to the head table, ignoring the stares of the assembled guests.

"Mrs. Thorne," Marcus said with chilling neutrality, addressing Lauren by her new surname. "Due to a direct breach of the facilities agreement, the premium amenities for this evening have been suspended. The remaining balance for venue damages, unauthorized guest displacement, and emergency staffing adjustments totals one hundred and twelve thousand dollars, due upon checkout at midnight."

"Are you insane?" Evelyn screeched, rushing up from her table, her diamond necklaces rattling against her collarbone. "We are the Thorne family! My daughter is the bride! Where is the owner? Bring the owner out here right now!"

Marcus turned his cold, professional gaze upon Evelyn. "The owner was here thirty minutes ago, madam. You had him escorted to the sidewalk."
