Chapter 4 - The Smear Campaign

The following morning broke gray and humid over Manhattan. True to his word, Julian spent the morning in Central Park with Lily. Wrapped in a buttercup-yellow coat, Lily had laughed until she was breathless on the painted horses of the vintage carousel, clutching a massive bouquet of multicolored balloons while Marcus kept a discreet, fifty-yard perimeter.
For a few hours, the world was innocent again.
But by 1:00 PM, the storm arrived.
Julian had just settled Lily into the playroom with her nanny, Maria, when his private phone chimed with an emergency notification from Vance Dynamics’ public relations department.
Julian stepped into the kitchen and unlocked the screen.
The headline from *The New York Ledger*—a high-society tabloid heavily financed by the Sterling family—was plastered across the digital front page:
**"BEHIND THE GILDED GATES: IS TECH BILLIONAIRE JULIAN VANCE UNFIT TO RAISE HIS HEIR?"**
Julian’s eyes scanned the text with icy detachment. The article barely mentioned the security footage that had exonerated Lily. Instead, it was an insidious character assassination. It cited "anonymous insiders" alleging that Julian worked eighty-hour weeks, leaving Lily isolated with private staff; that Lily had exhibited "concerning behavioral outbursts" at her elite Upper East Side academy; and that Julian’s sudden legal wrath against Victoria Sterling was the act of an unhinged, megalomaniacal father trying to cover up domestic dysfunction.
Beneath the article was a grainy, telephoto photograph of Lily taken through the wrought-iron fence of her school playground two weeks ago, her face circled in red.
A knock sounded on the kitchen door. Marcus walked in, holding an open laptop.
"It’s not just the tabloids," Marcus reported grimly. "Harrison Sterling’s digital marketing firm has activated thousands of bot accounts on social media. They’re swarming the comments on yesterday’s viral video, claiming the security tape was deepfaked by Vance Dynamics’ proprietary AI algorithms."
Julian didn't flinch. "And Donald?"
"Your uncle just checked into the Carlyle Hotel under an alias. At 11:00 AM, Donald’s attorneys filed an emergency motion in Manhattan Surrogate's Court. They are requesting an expedited welfare check on Lily and petitioning for a temporary freeze on your executive voting rights, citing 'severe reputational negligence threatening family assets.'"
Julian took a slow breath, feeling the familiar, razor-sharp focus that had made him the most feared young tech mogul in the country. "They’re moving faster than I anticipated. Harrison is desperate. The Sterling Conglomerate has a debt covenant payment due by 5:00 PM today, don't they?"
"Twenty-two million dollars," Marcus confirmed. "If they miss it, the bank initiates automatic foreclosure on their corporate headquarters on Madison Avenue."
"Who owns that debt right now, Marcus?"
Marcus allowed himself a rare, wolfish grin. "As of 9:45 AM, Vance Capital holds ninety-four percent of the underlying paper. We acquired it through three shell subsidiaries at an eight percent discount."
Julian set his phone down. "Then Harrison is trying to force a public spectacle to make me negotiate a standstill on that debt before the closing bell."
The house phone rang. Maria answered it in the foyer, her voice hesitant before transferring it to the kitchen console.
"Mr. Vance," Maria said softly over the intercom. "It's Headmistress Kensington from St. Jude's Academy."
Julian picked up the receiver. "Eleanor. Good afternoon."
"Julian," Eleanor Kensington’s voice was strained, laden with the uncomfortable awkwardness of an administrator caught between wealthy patrons. "I'm calling regarding the... unfortunate publicity circulating today. Several members of our parent board have contacted my office. They are expressing profound concerns regarding the media circus now surrounding Lily. Several parents have suggested... well, they suggested it might be best if Lily took a voluntary leave of absence until this matter with the Sterling family is resolved."
Julian’s fingers tightened slightly against the receiver. "Eleanor, let me ensure I understand you correctly. An innocent seven-year-old child was publicly framed for theft by a woman whose family sits on your endowment committee. We proved her innocence with unassailable video evidence. And your instinct is to punish the victim to appease the gossip of your donors?"
"Julian, you must understand our position! The paparazzi are already outside our gates—"
"I pay four hundred thousand dollars a year in auxiliary funding for your school’s science wing, Eleanor," Julian said, his tone chillingly polite. "And I pay it because Clara loved the rose gardens behind your chapel. If you dare suggest my daughter hide as if she has done something shameful, I will withdraw every cent of that funding, purchase the debt note on your campus expansion, and replace your board of trustees before the weekend."
There was an audible gasp on the other end of the line.
"Lily will return to class on Monday morning," Julian continued without raising his voice. "Her head will be held high. And if a single parent, teacher, or child whispers a word of this fabrication in her presence, you will answer to me personally. Do we understand each other?"
"Y-yes, Julian. Of course. We will handle the press," Eleanor stammered.
Julian hung up the phone without another word.
He turned to Marcus. "Harrison wants a war through proxies. He attacks my daughter’s school, he summons my deadbeat uncle, and he slanders my family in print."
Julian walked over to the coat rack and retrieved his charcoal cashmere coat.
"Where are we going?" Marcus asked.
Julian checked his watch. It was 2:15 PM.

"The Belvedere Club," Julian said, his eyes glittering like crushed ice. "Harrison hosts his private equity luncheon there every Friday. It’s time I delivered my response in person."
