Chapter 5 - The Manila Folder

The lieutenant commander knelt beside a nearby mess table, entered a six-digit code on the digital touchpad, and pressed his thumb against the biometric scanner. A sharp hiss of pressurized air escaped as the seal released.

From the waterproof compartment, he pulled out a thick, heavy-stock manila envelope bound with crimson classified tape and marked with a bold blue stamp: *TOP SECRET // SPECIAL COMPARTMENTED INFORMATION // EYES ONLY INSTALLATION COMMAND.*

The lieutenant commander handed the envelope to Captain Miller, the base CO, who handed it immediately to Admiral Vance.

Vance turned the folder over in his weathered hands. He looked at Reed.

"Chief Reed," Vance said.

"Sir!"

"You've been assigned to the Special Warfare Training Center here for fourteen months, correct?"

"Yes, Admiral. Serving as senior tactical instructor for phase two candidates."

"And during those fourteen months, you have developed a reputation for... rigorous standards," Vance noted, his tone deceptively conversational.

"I ensure our candidates meet the absolute standard of naval special warfare, sir. Weakness cannot be tolerated in our ranks." Reed’s chest expanded slightly. He believed, in his twisted vanity, that Vance was setting him up for an endorsement.

"Is that so?" Vance murmured. "And does that standard include striking an unarmed intelligence operative from behind in an enlisted chow hall?"

Reed's eyes flickered. A crack appeared in his stone-faced facade. "Sir, she was disrespectful to—"

"I asked you a question, Chief," Vance cut in, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly cold whisper. "Did your BUD/S cadre teach you to blindside women holding trays of food because you felt your ego threatened?"

Commander Harris blinked, sweat breaking out on his forehead. "Admiral... forgive me, sir. Did you say intelligence operative?"

Admiral Vance ignored Harris entirely. He stepped around Reed, walking directly toward me.

The old man stopped twelve inches away. For a fleeting second, the terrifying commander vanished, replaced by an expression of deep, suppressed fury at what had been done to me.

"Status, Lieutenant Commander?" Vance asked quietly.

May you like

The mess hall seemed to tilt on its axis.

Reed's head snapped sideways. Commander Harris looked like he was about to vomit.
