Chapter 6 - The Fall of Nicholas Ferguson

The color drained completely from Patricia's face. Her knees gave out, and she had to clutch the plastic handrail along the corridor wall to keep from collapsing onto the floor.

"No..." she whimpered, the realization finally crashing over her like a tidal wave. "No, that's impossible. You can't freeze our accounts without a hearing..."

"Under Title III of the Patriot Act and federal defense procurement statutes concerning national security assets, we can and we did," Special Agent Vance stated coldly. He nodded toward Sergeant Daniels. "Book him."

Sergeant Daniels stepped forward with two CMPD officers. With practiced efficiency, they spun Nicholas around, slammed his chest against the cold hospital wall, and wrenched his arms behind his back.

*Click. Clack.*

The sharp, metallic snap of ratcheting handcuffs sounded like the final gavel falling in a courtroom.

"Ow! You're hurting me! Those are too tight!" Nicholas whined, squirming against the brickwork. Tears of pure humiliation streamed down his reddened cheeks, mixing with snot and sweat. "Mom! Gregory! Help me!"

"Nicholas Ferguson, you are under arrest for felony domestic assault inflicting serious bodily injury, false imprisonment, and witness tampering," Sergeant Daniels recited in a monotone, unyielding cadence. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law..."

Gregory averted his eyes, turning his back on his brother entirely as the officers dragged Nicholas toward the central hallway.

"Gregory! Look at me!" Nicholas screamed, his polished composure completely shattered into ugly, undignified hysteria. "You swore we were partners! You swore nothing could touch us!"

"I don't know this man," Gregory muttered under his breath, staring fixedly at the elevator doors, desperate to salvage his own law career from the smoldering wreckage of his family's reputation.

Patricia chased after the officers, her diamond earrings swinging wildly, her heels clicking frantically on the floor. "Nicholas! Don't say anything! We'll get bail! I'll call Senator Hayes! I'll fix this!"

"Senator Hayes won't take your calls, Mrs. Ferguson," Special Agent Vance remarked as he walked alongside the escort. "His chief of staff was briefed on the procurement fraud thirty minutes ago. You're politically radioactive."

As the elevator doors opened, a crowd of hospital visitors, staff, and junior doctors stood watching. Flashbulbs went off as onlookers recorded the heir to the Ferguson empire being hauled away in steel shackles, weeping and blubbering like a terrified coward.

Inside the quiet observation room, the storm finally began to clear.

Abigail let out a long, ragged breath that sounded like she had been holding it underwater for months. The crushing weight of fear, isolation, and torment that had trapped her inside the Ferguson estate seemed to lift from her shoulders all at once.

Tears spilled from her swollen eye, but for the first time since I had walked through those doors, they were tears of profound relief.

"Mom..." she whispered, her voice breaking. "Is it really over?"

I walked back to the bed, reached down, and gently wrapped my arms around my daughter. I felt the fragile trembling of her body, but beneath that trembling, I felt the unmistakable heartbeat of a survivor.

"The nightmare is over, baby," I said softly, kissing her bruised forehead. "Now, we begin the reckoning."

Captain Miller stepped into the room, saluting smartly. "Colonel Gardner, the transport convoy is prepped and staged at the ambulance bay. We have a secure medical transport ready to transfer Abigail to the specialized trauma wing at Womack Army Medical Center on Fort Liberty. Full security detail assigned around the clock."

"Thank you, Captain," I said, looking back at him. "Move her out."

Two military medics entered with a specialized transport gurney, gently helping Abigail transition from the hospital bed. As they wheeled her down the corridor, surrounded by an unbroken escort of armed military police, every eye in the facility watched with deep reverence.

Abigail looked up at the soldiers flanking her sides—strong, disciplined, unyielding protectors—and then looked back at me. She smiled through her bruised lips, taking my hand tightly in hers.

Behind us, the Ferguson dynasty was burning to the ground. Ahead of us lay the legal battle that would strip them of every ill-gotten dime they possessed. But as we stepped into the cool night air where the transport engines hummed with power, I knew one thing with absolute certainty:

My daughter was finally safe, and Nicholas Ferguson was about to face the full, unbridled fury of a mother in uniform.
