Chapter 10 - The Confrontation at the Diner

The Blue Heron Diner sat off Route 90, its neon sign buzzing faintly against the midday heat. It was a greasy-spoon joint known for chicken-fried steak and patrons who minded their own business—which made it the ideal neutral ground.

I sat in the corner booth, wearing a crisp navy-blue blazer and pearl earrings, my hands resting calmly beside a sealed manila envelope. Marcus waited outside in an unmarked cruiser, parked behind the dumpster where he had a clear view of the entrance.

At exactly twelve-fifteen, the bell above the door jingled.

Demetrius stepped inside.

He looked like a ghost of the boy I had raised. His shirt was wrinkled, his hair unwashed, and deep purple shadows bruised the skin beneath his eyes. He scanned the diner anxiously, spotted me, and practically shuffled toward the booth like a condemned man walking to the gallows.

He slid into the vinyl seat across from me, keeping his eyes glued to the laminated menu.

"Mom," he croaked, his voice cracking.

"Don't call me that," I said quietly. "A mother is someone who raises a child, not an ATM machine marked for slaughter."

He flinched, shrinking back into the booth. "Look... about the video... that was Brenda's idea. Makenna was having a panic attack, and her mom just took over. I didn't want to post it, I swear! I tried to stop them—"

"Save your breath, Demetrius," I interrupted, sliding the manila envelope across the table until it touched his trembling fingers. "Open it."

He looked at me with wide, fearful eyes, then slowly peeled back the clasp. He pulled out the first sheet: Clara Fontenot’s high-resolution stills from the housewarming party, time-stamped and watermarked, clearly showing Makenna throwing the table, shrieking like a banshee, with not a single scratch on her body.

Underneath that was a certified copy of the parish sheriff's incident report, signed by Deputy Marcus and two other witnesses, detailing Makenna's fabricated assault claims.

And beneath that lay the bank transfers to Apex Holdings LLC.

Every drop of color drained from Demetrius’s face. His mouth fell open, his lower lip quivering uncontrollably. "You... you went to the bank."

"I did," I said, leaning forward, resting my forearms on the table. "You thought because I’m sixty-three and retired that my mind had turned to mush? You thought because you were the only baby I ever birthed that I would let you, your hysterical wife, and her criminal family rob me blind and throw me to the wolves?"

"Mom, you don't understand!" Demetrius leaned in, tears finally spilling over his lashes, his voice breaking into a desperate whisper. "Gary Vance is crazy! Makenna's dad owes over sixty thousand dollars to some very bad people in New Orleans! When Makenna and I got married, Brenda told Gary that I had an inheritance coming from you! They told Gary that your new house was bought with *my* trust fund!"

"You lied to them to look like a big man," I said with cold clarity.

"I didn't have a choice!" he wept, burying his face in his hands. "Gary said if the money didn't start coming in, he’d send people to our apartment! That’s why we had to move in with you! Makenna thought if we lived there, we could get you to add my name to the deed, and then we could take out a home equity line of credit to pay off Gary! That’s the only reason Brenda pushed this!"

I stared at the grown man sitting before me, weeping into his dirty hands. There was no grandeur in him. No courage. Just a coward who had been willing to throw his own mother into financial ruin to save his own hide from the scumbags he had chosen to marry into.

"You have one chance to save yourself from federal prison, Demetrius," I said, my voice cutting through his sniveling.

He looked up, desperate hope gleaming in his red eyes. "Anything. Mom, please, anything."

"You go on that parish forum, from your own verified account, right now. You post a full, written retraction and an apology. You admit the bruises were fake, you admit Makenna is not pregnant, and you admit that you stole eight thousand dollars from my account. You do that, and I give you twenty-four hours to leave this parish and never contact me again. If you don't, Marcus walks through that door and handcuffs you right in front of the lunch crowd."

Demetrius stared at the papers, his chest heaving. "Brenda will kill me. Makenna will divorce me."

May you like

"Then you’d better start packing your bags, son," I said, standing up from the booth and smoothing down my blazer. "Because your twenty-four hours started sixty seconds ago."
