Chapter 4 - Unraveling the Facade

The revelation hit the room like a bomb.
Gas station socks.
She hadn't even bothered going to a department store. She had grabbed an impulse item off a revolving metal rack while filling up her gas tank on Christmas Eve, tossed it in an old box, and had the audacity to lecture me about gratitude and being humble.
"A gas station?" Grandma Ruth chuckled, though there was zero humor in her eyes. "My four hundred dollars turned into designer leather for a stepmother and truck-stop foot warmers for an orphan child."
"She’s not an orphan!" Dana shrieked, finally losing all control. "Her mother is living in California sipping wine on a beach! Natalie gets child support, she gets everything handed to her, while Mason has suffered through a bitter divorce with zero support from his deadbeat biological father!"
"Leave Mason out of this!" Dad roared, slamming Dana’s phone down on the dining table with a crack that made everyone jump. "Mason has nothing to do with you stealing money from an elderly woman meant for my daughter!"
"I am your wife!" Dana shouted back, tears of fury streaming down her face. "I hold this family together! I cook, I clean, I organized this entire holiday! And you're treating me like a criminal because I prioritized our family's public image! Do you know how Mason would look if he went back to middle school without the new console everyone else has? He would be a social outcast!"
"And what about Natalie?" Dad yelled, his chest heaving. "What message did you send to my daughter this morning? You sat there, watched her watch your son open twelve expensive packages, handed her gas station socks, and told her that Christmas wasn't about expensive gifts! You looked her in the eyes and humiliated her on purpose!"
"She needs to learn her place!" Dana blurted out.
The words hung in the air, toxic and heavy.

Even Dana seemed to realize what she had just said. She slapped a hand over her mouth, her eyes darting between Dad and Grandma Ruth.
"Her place?" Dad asked, his voice suddenly dropping to a whisper that sounded far more terrifying than his shouting. "Her place in her own home?"
