Chapter 5 - The Arraignment Shockwave

At 9:45 AM, Mark and I arrived at the County Municipal Courthouse, escorted by an attorney from Mark’s firm named Clara Jenkins.

The courtroom was packed with bailiffs, defense lawyers, and families waiting for morning dockets, but Nicole’s case was at the top of the schedule due to the severity of the charges and the gun found in her vehicle.

When the side door opened and Nicole was escorted in, my breath caught.

Gone was the smug, entitled woman who had stood in Ava’s doorway with designer shopping bags. Nicole was wearing an oversized orange jumpsuit, her wrists shackled to a chain around her waist. Her hair was greasy, her makeup smeared across her cheeks from crying, and her posture was completely broken.

Behind the wooden gallery rail sat Mom and Dad. When Mom saw me walk in, she glared with pure venom, mouthing the word *traitor*. I sat beside Clara Jenkins and stared straight ahead.

“Docket number 409-B,” the bailiff announced. “State vs. Nicole Miller-Hayes. Charges: Grand Larceny in the Second Degree, Possession of Stolen Property, Identity Theft in the First Degree, and Criminal Possession of a Firearm.”

Nicole whimpered, leaning heavily on her court-appointed public defender.

The assistant district attorney, a sharp-featured woman named Elena Ramos, stepped up to the podium. “Your Honor, the State requests bail be set at five hundred thousand dollars cash, or no bail pending a grand jury indictment. The defendant was apprehended attempting to sell a unique, registered luxury timepiece valued at thirty-eight thousand five hundred dollars. Upon searching her vehicle, officers discovered stolen property, forged documents, and an unregistered nine-millimeter handgun linked to known felon Julian Vance.”

Mom let out a loud sob in the gallery. Dad put his arm around her, glaring at the back of my head.

The public defender hurried to speak. “Your Honor, my client is a mother of two minor children. She has no prior violent criminal record. She claims the property was handed down within the family as part of an informal dispute, and she had no knowledge of the weapon inside the vehicle, which is co-registered to her husband.”

Judge Harrison, a no-nonsense magistrate known for harsh rulings on domestic financial abuse, adjusted his glasses and looked down at Nicole.

“Mrs. Hayes, is the victim in this matter your sister?” the judge asked.

Nicole nodded rapidly, tears pouring down her cheeks. “Yes, Your Honor! It’s all a huge misunderstanding! Sarah was just upset about some cash Ava saved! Sarah, tell him! Please tell him! I’m your sister!”

She twisted around in her seat, wailing at me across the courtroom. Bailiffs immediately grabbed her shoulders, forcing her back down.

The prosecutor stepped forward again. “Your Honor, the victim, Sarah Miller, is present in the courtroom. Furthermore, we have an audio recording submitted by the victim just two hours ago, wherein an associate of Julian Vance threatens the life of the victim’s seven-year-old child if these charges are not dropped.”

A collective gasp swept through the gallery.

Judge Harrison’s eyes widened behind his wire-rimmed glasses. The temperature in the room plummeted.

“Threatening a minor witness?” Judge Harrison’s voice turned dangerously quiet. “Bail is denied. The defendant will be remanded to the maximum-security wing of the county detention facility pending grand jury indictment. Furthermore, I am issuing a temporary order of protection forbidding the defendant, her parents, or any proxies from contacting Sarah Miller or Ava Miller directly or indirectly.”

“No! No! Please!” Nicole screamed, her knees buckling as two guards hoisted her up by her arms and dragged her through the heavy steel door. “Sarah, don’t do this to me! Mom! Dad!”

Mom lunged toward the aisle, trying to reach me, but two armed bailiffs immediately blocked her path.

“Sit down, ma’am, or you will be held in contempt!” the bailiff barked.

I stood up, smoothed my coat, and walked out the double doors with Mark and Clara, not looking back once.
