Chapter 10 - THE NEW SKYLINE

Two years later.

The evening sun was setting over the Philadelphia skyline, painting the clouds in brilliant shades of gold, amber, and violet.

I stood on the balcony of my penthouse apartment, holding a glass of sparkling water, enjoying the cool evening breeze.

My software, PharmGuard, was now integrated into over two hundred hospitals nationwide. I had been named one of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 in Healthcare Technology, and my foundation was funding three new domestic abuse shelters across the state.

Footsteps sounded softly behind me on the wooden deck.

Marcus walked out, wearing a comfortable grey sweater, and wrapped his arms gently around my waist from behind. He rested his chin on my shoulder, looking out at the city lights turning on below us.

“What are you thinking about?” Marcus whispered, his warm breath tickling my ear.

I smiled, leaning my head back against his chest.

“I was thinking about the basement,” I said softly.

“Do you miss it?” he teased gently.

“Not for a single second,” I laughed. “I was thinking about how I used to sit down there near that cold concrete wall, frozen in the winter, believing that my life would never get bigger than that secondhand desk.”

I reached down and touched the thin, pale scar above my left eyebrow—a silent medal of honor from the night I chose my own survival.

“And now?” Marcus asked, tightening his arms around me.

I looked out at the glowing skyline—a city that knew my name, a career that saved thousands of lives every day, and a man who loved me for exactly who I was.

“And now,” I whispered, turning around in his arms and looking up into his grey eyes, “I own the sky.”

He leaned down and kissed me as the stars came out over the city—bright, unyielding, and completely free.
