Chapter 5 - Dawn at the Grand Palm

By 6:30 AM, the morning sun was spilling gold over the pristine manicured lawns of The Grand Del Mar.
Florists were unloading thousands of white calla lilies. A twelve-piece string orchestra was setting up their stands beneath the floral rotunda. Sutton was in the bridal penthouse suite on the fourth floor, surrounded by four makeup artists, three hair stylists, and six bridesmaids sipping vintage champagne out of crystal flutes.
She was wearing a custom-embroidered silk robe with the words *“Mrs. Vance”* stitched in gold across the back.
"Make sure the contouring on my cheekbones is sharper," Sutton demanded, staring into the illuminated vanity mirror while a stylist nervously dusted powder across her forehead. "Alden’s mother invited the society editors from two lifestyle magazines. If I look washed out in the sunlight, you're not getting tipped."
"Of course, Miss Sterling," the girl murmured.
The door to the bridal suite banged open, and our father, Stellin, strode in, looking flushed in his tuxedo pants and an unbuttoned dress shirt. He carried a leather folio, his forehead beaded with sweat.
"Eleanor says Clara’s phone is completely turned off," Stellin said, checking his gold watch nervously. "The little ingrate didn't come back to the villa last night. The hospital said she discharged herself against medical advice at four in the morning."
Sutton rolled her eyes, waving a freshly manicured hand dismissively. "Who cares, Dad? Let her rot in a motel room. She’s just trying to steal the spotlight like she always does. The important thing is that the terrace bill was cleared, right?"
"Well... yes," Stellin hesitated, shifting his weight. "The resort took the card last night. But the front desk left a strange voicemail thirty minutes ago requesting my presence at the financial administration office before the ceremony begins."
"It’s probably just to finalize the tip for the valet staff," Briany chimed in, pouring more champagne. "Don't stress, Stellin! Today is about Sutton becoming royalty!"
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the penthouse suite opened again.
This time, it wasn't a florist or a bridesmaid. It was Monsieur Laurent, the austere, stone-faced French general manager of the resort, flanked by two towering private security officers wearing dark suits and earpieces.
The stylists froze. The air in the bridal suite turned freezing cold.
"Pardon the intrusion, Miss Sterling," Laurent said, his voice flat, devoid of the customary deference he had shown all week. "Mr. Stellin Sterling, I presume?"
"Yes, Laurent, what is the meaning of this?" Stellin puffed his chest out, attempting to project patriarchal authority. "My daughter is getting dressed for her ceremony! You can't just barge in here with security guards!"
"As of forty-two minutes ago," Laurent stated, holding up an official carbon-copy notification clipboard, "the merchant bank reversed the credit line authorization of forty-two thousand five hundred dollars. The corporate account holder, Apex Precision Assessments, has filed formal criminal charges for fraudulent card misuse."
Sutton whipped around in her vanity chair, knocking a bottle of expensive perfume to the floor. It shattered on the marble tile, filling the room with the suffocating scent of jasmine and bergamot.
"What?!" Sutton shrieked. "That’s my sister’s company! She paid for that! She’s our family!"
"The cardholder did not authorize this charge," Laurent replied with chilling professionalism. "Furthermore, because this folio is now officially classified as fraudulent, the master suite package, the grand ballroom access, and the culinary services are immediately suspended. By order of the property trustees, all event access keys have been deactivated."

"You can't do this!" Eleanor rushed into the room from the connecting suite, clutching her pearl necklace with both hands. "The guests are already arriving! There are two hundred people downstairs having coffee on the terrace! Our son-in-law is Alden Vance! His family could buy this entire hotel!"
"The Vance family," Laurent said, a slight, lethal smirk touching the corners of his lips, "is precisely who instructed us to freeze the accounts."
