Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at the Office

The glass-and-steel atrium of the corporate tower where Julian worked was normally a cathedral of hushed voices, clicking heels, and polished marble. Today, as Julian and I pushed through the revolving doors, it sounded like an emergency psychiatric ward.

Chloe stood in the center of the vast lobby, surrounded by three burly security guards in dark blazers who were keeping a strict five-foot perimeter around her. She was wearing a dramatic, oversized beige trench coat, her makeup smeared down her cheeks in theatrical streaks of mascara. In her hands, she clutched a stack of fluorescent pink cardstock papers.

Two executive vice presidents from Julian’s division stood near the elevator banks, watching with expressions of profound disgust and alarm.

"He told me he loved me!" Chloe was shrieking, her voice bouncing shrilly off the seventy-foot glass ceiling. "He held my hand at the Fourth of July barbecue! He whispered in my ear that Maya was cold and manipulative, that he wished he had met me first! And when I tried to save him with my grandmother's ring, Maya beat me! She’s an abuser, just like her fiancé! Look at the texts! Look at what he sent me!"

"Miss, you need to lower your voice and exit the premises immediately," the lead security guard, a towering man named Dave, said firmly. "You are trespassing on private commercial property."

"Don't touch me! If you touch me, I’ll sue this entire company!" Chloe shrieked, scattering half her pink flyers across the polished granite floor.

Julian stepped forward. His footsteps echoed with deliberate, heavy authority across the marble.

"Chloe," he said.

His voice wasn't loud, but it carried an authority so chilling that Chloe froze instantly. She whipped her head around, her tear-streaked eyes lighting up with a deranged, triumphant spark.

"Julian!" she cried, rushing toward him with her arms outstretched like a tragic heroine in a cheap soap opera. "You came! Tell them, Julian! Tell them you didn't mean to hurt Mom! Tell them Maya is forcing you into this!"

Julian didn't step back. He simply raised one hand, palm outward, his face carved from pure granite. "Stay right where you are. If you take one more step toward me or my fiancée, Officer Hendricks’ colleagues will take you out of here in zip-ties."

Chloe skidded to a halt, looking between Julian and me. The pink flyers trembled in her manicured hands. "Julian... what are you doing? I’m trying to save you. We belong together. You know we do. That day at the grill, when you handed me that glass of lemonade... you looked at me."

"I looked at you," Julian said with lethal, deliberate clarity that rang across the entire lobby, ensuring every security guard, receptionist, and executive heard every syllable, "because you were blocking the path to the cooler, Chloe. I handed you a lemonade because you were sweating and complaining. I have never loved you. I have never had feelings for you. I find your behavior repellent, pathetic, and deeply disturbed."

The color drained from Chloe’s face, leaving behind a pasty, sickly white. "No... no, Maya made you say that. Maya is threatening you—"

"Maya is the love of my life," Julian said, stepping slightly in front of me, shielding me completely from her manic gaze. "And you are a thief. You totaled her first car, you lived off money stolen from her name, and you stood by while your mother battered me on our front doorstep. You are not a victim, Chloe. You are a parasite."

Two local police cruisers pulled up outside the plate-glass doors, their blue and red lights painting the marble lobby in rhythmic flashes. Two uniformed officers stepped through the revolving doors, their hands resting near their duty belts.

"Officer," Julian called out, not breaking eye contact with Chloe. "This woman has been served with notice of an active domestic violence investigation involving our residence. She has entered my private workplace, created a public disturbance, and defamed my character to my employers. I want her formally trespassed from this property, and I am filing an immediate civil restraining order against her."

Chloe’s lower lip began to tremble violently. The performative tears vanished, replaced by sheer, naked terror as the officers approached her, one taking her by the elbow.

"Wait... no! Don't touch me! Julian, tell them! Maya, tell them to stop!" Chloe screamed, thrashing awkwardly as the officers guided her toward the glass exit. "You can’t do this to me! Mom will destroy you! Dad won't let you get away with this! Maya, you bitch! You ruin everything!"

Her shrill screams faded as the glass doors sealed shut behind her.

Julian turned to his horrified colleagues near the elevators, gave a calm, polite nod of apology, and said, "I apologize for the disturbance, gentlemen. HR will have the police report on file within the hour."

Then he turned to me, his dark eyes fierce with protective fury. "Now," he said softly, "let’s go see your father."
