Chapter 11 - The Unopened Vault

Three weeks later, the ranch had settled into a steady, peaceful rhythm.

Elena Ross and I had restructured the Aegis BioTech board, removing Donald Vance’s cronies and establishing a permanent endowment for local family farmers and agricultural research. The media circus had completely forgotten about the Reynolds family, chasing the next sensational corporate scandal.

It was late on a Sunday evening. I walked out to Walter’s workshop in the barn, carrying a toolbox to finish repairing the floorboards that Richard had damaged during his desperate break-in.

The workshop was warm, illuminated by the amber glow of overhead filament bulbs. I knelt down by Walter’s heavy cast-iron workbench, clearing away the scattered tools.

As I swept away decades of wood shavings and dried machine grease from the base of the workbench, my eyes caught a strange circular groove embedded directly into the solid reinforced concrete foundation.

I paused. I knelt closer, blowing away the remaining dust.

In the center of the concrete was a polished circular plate of brushed steel—bearing the exact same diameter and pattern as the electronic scanner in Karen Walker's office. And carved precisely into the steel plate was a single word:

*Legacy.*

My heart thudded against my ribs.

I looked down at the silver ring on my right hand. Walter hadn't just given Karen a scanner. He had built another one right here, buried beneath three inches of grease and sawdust under his own workbench.

Richard had been right about one thing: Walter *did* have a secret vault. But it wasn't full of stolen bearer bonds or crooked corporate cash.

I took a deep breath, extended my hand, and pressed the ring into the circular indentation.

A sharp, mechanical chime echoed beneath the floor.

The heavy concrete slab beneath the workbench shuddered. With the hiss of pneumatic seals breaking after decades of silence, a three-foot section of the floor slowly recessed downward and slid aside, revealing a steep flight of industrial steel stairs leading into an illuminated subterranean room beneath the barn.

I grabbed a heavy flashlight from the bench and descended the cold steel steps, the air turning cool and dry, humming with the quiet vibration of an independent climate-control generator.

When my boots hit the bottom floor, the motion-sensor lights flickered to life.

I stopped dead in my tracks.

The room wasn't an archive for money. It was a private, fortified intelligence bunker.

Lining the concrete walls were dozens of corkboards covered in photographs, corporate flowcharts, and surveillance reports dating back over twenty-five years. But it wasn't Aegis BioTech that Walter had been investigating.

Mounted in the center of the far wall was an enlarged, certified birth certificate.

I stepped closer, my flashlight trembling in my grip as the overhead lights revealed the names printed on the legal document.

**CHILD: MICHAEL REYNOLDS**

**MOTHER: UNKNOWN / SEALED BY COURT ORDER**

**FATHER: UNKNOWN / SEALED BY COURT ORDER**

**LEGAL GUARDIANS AT ADOPTION: RICHARD REYNOLDS & ELEANOR REYNOLDS**

A cold wave of shock washed over me, draining the blood from my face.

Richard and Eleanor weren't my biological parents. They had adopted me under sealed court records when I was an infant.

Directly beneath the birth certificate, pinned to the center of the board with a heavy steel spike, was a manila dossier stamped with the crest of the Department of Defense and marked in crimson ink:

**PROJECT CHIRON: BIOMETRIC KEY INHERITANCE**

**PRIMARY SUBJECT: MICHAEL**

**STATUS: TARGET ACTIVATION COMPLETE UPON WALTER'S DEATH**

Resting on top of the dossier was a black satellite phone, a handwritten note from Walter, and a set of titanium keys to a private hangar located at the Helena Regional Airport.

Suddenly, the silent satellite phone on the desk began to ring, its digital screen flashing with an incoming encrypted call from an unlisted international number.
