Chapter 8 - THE TRIAL OF BRENDA MILLER

October 14th.

The main courtroom of the County Circuit Court was packed.

I sat in the front row of the prosecution gallery, wearing a tailored cream blazer, my surgical scar on my left arm now healed into a thin, neat silver line.

Beside me sat Dr. Monica Vance and Arthur Vance.

At the defense table sat my mother and her lawyer.

Judge Margaret Thomas tapped her gavel against the block.

"In the matter of State v. Brenda Miller," Judge Thomas announced. "The court has reviewed the negotiated plea agreement and civil settlement terms."

Judge Thomas looked over her glasses at my mother.

"Defendant Brenda Miller," Judge Thomas said, her voice dripping with absolute disgust. "I have viewed the video recording of October 12th. I have seen many violent crimes in my thirty years on the bench, but watching a mother brutally shatter her daughter’s arm with a construction brick while mocking her tears is an act of depravity that defies comprehension."

My mother sat with her head bowed, weeping silently into a tissue.

"Under the terms of the accepted plea agreement," Judge Thomas read, "the defendant is sentenced to twenty-four months in the State Women’s Correctional Facility, followed by thirty-six months of supervised probation, mandatory psychiatric evaluation, and a permanent, lifelong Order of Protection prohibiting any contact with Emily Miller."

CRACK.

The gavel struck the block.

Two female bailiffs stepped forward, pulling my mother to her feet, clicking steel handcuffs around her wrists.

My mother turned her head as she was being led away toward the side holding cell.

She looked at me across the wooden railing. For the first time in my life, there was no anger in her eyes. No superiority. No condescension.

There was only the quiet, crushing weight of total defeat.

I didn't smile. I didn't cheer.

I simply adjusted my jacket, held my head high, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright, clear autumn sunshine.
