Chapter 8 - The Courtroom Showdown

The Cumberland County Superior Courthouse stood as an imposing monument of gray granite and marble in the heart of Portland. Inside Courtroom 3B, the air smelled of floor wax, old paper, and impending disaster for Richard Bennett.
Richard sat at the defense table across the aisle from me, looking twenty pounds lighter and ten years older than the man who had ignored my divorce papers six weeks ago. His expensive Italian suit hung loosely from his frame, his shirt collar gaped at his neck, and dark circles were bruised deeply beneath his bloodshot eyes. Beside him sat his lead counsel, an attorney whose frantic shuffling of papers suggested he was preparing for an execution rather than an argument.
At our table, Marcus Vance sat with the quiet, predatory calm of a grandmaster who had already seen checkmate fifteen moves ahead. I sat beside him in a simple, tailored navy dress, holding my head high. Caleb, Lucas, and Emma were waiting in the private family consultation room down the hall with Clara, shielded from the legal carnage about to unfold.
Judge Harrison, a no-nonsense jurist with thirty years of family law experience and a reputation for crushing corporate gamesmanship, adjusted his half-moon glasses and looked down from the bench.
“We are here this morning to finalize the temporary custody, support, and asset injunctions in the matter of *Bennett v. Bennett*,” Judge Harrison announced, his gravelly voice echoing through the wood-paneled room. “Mr. Miller, I have reviewed your client’s latest financial disclosures. Frankly, they read like a work of creative fiction.”
Richard flinched. His attorney, Mr. Miller, stood up quickly, tugging nervously at his cuffs.
“Your Honor, my client has been entirely transparent regarding the restructuring of his corporate partnership—”
“Transparent?” Judge Harrison interrupted, his eyebrows arching dangerously. “Mr. Miller, your client transferred five hundred and forty thousand dollars into a shell company in the Cayman Islands three days after his wife filed for divorce. That is a direct violation of this court’s standing financial injunction. Furthermore, the forensic audit provided by Mr. Vance shows a systemic pattern of asset concealment dating back four years.”
“Your Honor,” Richard blurted out, standing up abruptly, ignoring his attorney’s frantic tug on his sleeve. “If I may speak—”
“Sit down, Mr. Bennett!” the judge commanded, his voice cracking like a rifle shot across the courtroom. “You will speak through your counsel, or you will spend the afternoon contemplating your manners in a holding cell!”
Richard collapsed back into his leather chair, his face burning crimson.
Marcus Vance stood up smoothly, buttoning his jacket with measured elegance. “Your Honor, we are not merely dealing with financial misconduct. We are dealing with an intentional, nine-year campaign of parental abandonment and psychological abuse directed at an eleven-year-old minor child, Emma Bennett.”
Marcus walked toward the center of the courtroom, holding a certified document in his hand.
“The court has already received the undisputed genetic confirmation that Emma is Mr. Bennett’s biological daughter. Yet, for nine years, Mr. Bennett categorized this child as a dependent ward while funneling marital assets to conceal her true parentage from his own mother and his corporate board. Now that his deception has been exposed, he has attempted to argue that he owes no retroactive support because the child was provided for under the marital roof.”
Marcus turned, fixing a blistering gaze onto Richard.
“A child is not a houseplant, Your Honor. You do not fulfill your parental obligations simply by providing roof tiles and running water while actively denying her identity, her dignity, and her place in the family. We are requesting full legal and sole physical custody of all three children—Caleb, Lucas, and Emma—with zero unsupervised visitation for Mr. Bennett until comprehensive psychological evaluations are completed.”
“That is absurd!” Miller shouted, leaping up. “Caleb and Lucas are Mr. Bennett’s sons! They have a deep, bonded relationship with their father! You cannot sever a father’s relationship with his sons over an administrative dispute regarding Emma!”
“Administrative dispute?” Judge Harrison leaned forward, his eyes burning with genuine indignation. “Is that what you call abandoning your own flesh and blood to the cruel whims of your mother, Mr. Miller? I have read the deposition of Caleb Bennett. The boy is fourteen years old, and he stated under oath that his father never once acknowledged Emma as his sister in public, and permitted his grandmother to verbally degrade the child at every family gathering.”
The judge looked directly at Richard, his expression cold and unyielding.
“Mr. Bennett, you have demonstrated a profound, catastrophic moral failure. You have treated this courtroom, your marriage, and most egregiously, your innocent daughter, as collateral damage in your pathetic attempt to preserve your social standing.”
The judge slammed his gavel down once.
“The court makes the following orders, effective immediately: Temporary sole legal and physical custody of Caleb, Lucas, and Emma Bennett is awarded exclusively to Laura Bennett. Mr. Bennett’s visitation is suspended pending psychological evaluation and the recommendation of a guardian ad litem.”
Richard buried his face in his hands, let out a ragged, choking sob that echoed off the high marble walls.
“Regarding finances,” Judge Harrison continued relentlessly, “the offshore accounts are frozen, and Mr. Bennett is ordered to repatriate all transferred funds within forty-eight hours. Mr. Bennett will pay interim child support in the amount of twelve thousand dollars per month, plus retroactive support for Emma Bennett dating back seven years, totaling three hundred and eighty thousand dollars, payable directly from his share of the marital estate.”
The judge looked over at Marcus Vance and gave a slight, respectful nod. “And finally, the court orders that Emma Bennett’s birth certificate be formally amended to reflect Richard Bennett as her biological father, with all associated inheritance rights permanently secured under state law.”
*Bang.*
The gavel struck the sounding block like the closing of a vault door.
