Chapter 6 - Public Ruin

Boxing Day in the affluent suburb of Oakridge was usually a spectacle of leisurely brunches, post-holiday tennis matches, and socialite gossip at the Oakridge Country Club.
At 10:30 AM, Linda Harrington arrived at the club's grand clubhouse. She was visibly pale under her heavy foundation, wearing a high-collared fur coat to project an image of complete normalcy. Daniel had stayed locked in his study all night, staring at his computer screen in catatonic silence, but Linda refused to cower. In her mind, perception was reality. If she acted like nothing had happened, the social circles would assume Arthur Vance was merely blowing hot air.
"Good morning, Evelyn! Lovely morning, Clara," Linda said with a tight, painted smile as she walked through the dining terrace toward her customary corner table.
The women she addressed didn't smile back. Clara, whose husband sat on the municipal board, looked away quickly and whispered something to her companion. The whispers had already spread like wildfire through Oakridge’s elite. Daniel’s uncle Richard had spent the early morning hours frantically liquidating his holdings, and everyone knew something catastrophic had detonated inside the Harrington house.
Linda’s table was occupied. Or rather, her favorite table had not been reserved for her.
The club manager, a man who had bowed and scraped to the Harrington family for two decades, stepped forward, his hands clasped nervously in front of his tailored suit.
"Mrs. Harrington," he said in a low voice. "May we speak in the vestibule for a moment?"
"What is the meaning of this, Thomas?" Linda hissed, her voice rising. "Why isn't my table prepared? Where is my mimosa?"
"Mrs. Harrington, please lower your voice," Thomas murmured, sweating under his collar. "Your family's corporate membership was guaranteed through Harrington Logistics. As of eight o'clock this morning, the corporate accounts were frozen by creditor injunction. Furthermore, the board held an emergency conference call an hour ago regarding... the incident reported by the local authorities."
"Incident? What incident? That was a private family matter!"
Before Thomas could answer, the frosted glass doors of the country club swung open with authority.
Two uniformed officers from the Oakridge Police Department entered, followed by Detective Miller in plainclothes. Every head in the dining room turned. The clatter of silverware ceased instantly.
"Linda Harrington?" Detective Miller asked, his badge displayed in his left hand as he walked directly toward her.
Linda froze, her chin tilting up defensively. "Yes. What is this theatrical nonsense?"
"Ma'am, there is an active warrant for your arrest for felony domestic battery, assault with a deadly substance, and endangering the welfare of a child," Detective Miller stated in a loud, clear voice that echoed off the high cedar rafters.
A collective gasp swept through the country club. Phones were immediately pulled from designer purses. Cameras were quietly raised.
"Are you insane?!" Linda shrieked, backing into a potted palm. "Do you know who I am? I am Linda Harrington! My grandfather donated the land this police station sits on!"
"Hands behind your back, ma'am," the younger female officer said calmly, stepping forward with a pair of cold steel handcuffs.
"Daniel! Where is Daniel?!" Linda screamed as the metal ratcheted around her wrists with a sharp, unforgiving *click*. "You cannot do this to me! Get your filthy hands off my coat! Sarah did this! That ungrateful little peasant—"
May you like
"You have the right to remain silent," the officer read flatly, taking Linda by the arm and escorting her through the dining room.
Dozens of high-society peers watched in stunned silence, some even snapping photos for their private group chats, as the grand matriarch of the Harrington family was marched in handcuffs out the front doors and pushed into the back of a black-and-white cruiser.
