Chapter 6 - What Was Behind the Red Door

I didn't go alone.
I made sure whoever sent the message thought I did.
Two federal agents followed me from a distance.
Olivia stayed on the phone.
The warehouse stood at the edge of an industrial district.
No lights.
No cars.
Just a red metal door.
I opened it.
Inside were hundreds of boxes.
Each had a woman's name.
Rachel.
Amanda.
Susan.
Claire.
Then mine.
I opened my box.
Inside were copies of my financial records from the last seven years.
Photographs of me.
My business contracts.
My private correspondence.
Even medical records.
Someone had been monitoring me for years.
I felt sick.
Then I opened Rachel's box.
There were photographs of her arguing with Bradley.
Letters.
Bank statements.
And a video.
I pressed play.
Barbara appeared on screen.
She looked younger.
She was talking to Bradley.
“You marry her, gain access to the company, and make her trust you.”
Bradley asked:
“What if she refuses?”
Barbara smiled.
“Then make her feel guilty.”
I froze.
The video continued.
“Women like Maddie don't leave men they think they can save.”
Bradley laughed.
“What if she finds out?”
Barbara's expression hardened.
“Then we make her look unstable.”
I stopped the video.
My entire marriage had been a performance.
Every apology.
Every argument.
Every time Bradley told me I was “too sensitive.”
It had all been part of a plan.
Then I heard footsteps.
I turned.
Barbara stood at the door.
“You shouldn't have come.”
I stepped back.
“You destroyed Rachel.”
Barbara smiled.
“Rachel destroyed herself.”
“You stole from her.”
“She was weak.”
“You tried to steal my company.”
“No.”
Barbara shook her head.
“I was going to take what you were foolish enough to give away.”
“You manipulated my husband.”
“He was easy to manipulate.”
I looked at her.
“Did he ever love me?”
Barbara paused.
“No.”
The answer hurt.
But strangely, it also freed me.
She continued.
“He loved what you owned.”
I nodded.
“Then why push me into that pool?”
Barbara smiled.
“Because I wanted you angry.”
“Why?”
“Because angry women make mistakes.”
I stared.
“You wanted me to react.”
“Yes.”
“You wanted evidence that I was unstable.”
“Yes.”
I suddenly understood.
The pool wasn't random.
It had been staged.
The filming.
The cousins.
The laughter.
Everything.
Barbara had planned it.
She wanted me to explode.
She wanted a video of me screaming.
She wanted to use it in court.
But I hadn't.
I had walked away.
Barbara's smile faded.
“You ruined everything.”
“No.”
I looked around.
“You ruined everything.”
The federal agents entered.
Barbara's face collapsed.
“You set me up.”
I shook my head.
“You did that yourself.”
She was arrested.
The investigation lasted months.
Bradley confessed.
Elena testified.
Financial records were recovered.
Rachel's family received justice.
But one question remained.
Why had Barbara targeted me specifically?
Olivia found the answer.
My company wasn't simply valuable.
It owned a patent.
A technology licensing agreement worth hundreds of millions.
Barbara had known.
She had wanted the patent.
And Bradley's family had planned to transfer it overseas.
If they had succeeded, my company would have collapsed.
I would have lost everything.
Instead, I retained control.
The court eventually ruled in my favor.
Bradley was sentenced for fraud.
Barbara received a longer sentence.
Elena received protection after cooperating.
And the Ashford family empire collapsed.
But something unexpected happened.
One morning, I received a letter.
It was from Bradley.
I almost threw it away.
Instead, I opened it.
There was only one paragraph.
Maddie, I don't expect forgiveness. I only want you to know that the night I pushed you into the pool was the moment I understood I had lost you forever. I thought I was humiliating you. I didn't realize I was destroying the last piece of myself that still knew how to love.
I folded the letter.
I didn't forgive him.
Not then.
Maybe not ever.
But I finally stopped wondering why he had done it.
I knew.
Greed.
Cowardice.
May you like
And the belief that I would always stay.
He was wrong.
