Chapter 5 - The Wall Begins to Crack

"Calm down, Arthur! Speak English!" Jonathan barked, turning his back to the family and pacing toward the patio doors.

Florence frowned, glancing at Richard. "What is he talking about? Is that the bank?"

"It's Vanguard," Richard muttered, folding his newspaper with sudden urgency. "The venture deal. If those funds don't clear by Friday, our credit lines collapse."

I stood perfectly still by the kitchen counter, watching Jonathan's shoulders hunch as he listened to his chief financial officer.

"They can't just pause the disbursement!" Jonathan was shouting now, his voice cracking with desperation. "The term sheet was signed two weeks ago! We already drew down on the bridge loan against their commitment! If Vanguard pulls out, we are insolvent by the end of the week!"

He listened for another ten seconds, his knuckles turning white around the phone.

"A compliance hold? From who? ... Who is Marcus Vance? ... The Chief of Staff? I've never even spoken to him! I deal with Henderson!"

A pause.

"He said the directive came directly from the Managing Partner? Arthur, Henderson told me the Managing Partner was a silent figurehead who rubber-stamps committee approvals! Find out what they want! Offer them another five percent equity! Offer them board seats! Just don't let them walk away!"

Jonathan hung up the phone. He was breathing heavily, sweat beading along his hairline. The arrogant, dominating patriarch of ten minutes ago had vanished, replaced by a terrified boy watching his sandcastle wash away in the tide.

"Jonathan?" Florence asked, her voice wavering. "What happened? You said the hundred and twenty million was guaranteed. You promised Bradley his new division!"

"Shut up, Mom!" Jonathan snapped viciously.

Florence gasped, recoiling as if she had been slapped herself.

Jonathan turned around, his eyes wild. He looked at Richard. "Vanguard's executive office just flagged our restructuring plan. They're demanding an emergency forensic review of our offshore liabilities. They frozen all pending capital transfers."

Richard went pale. "The Cayman accounts? If they look at those, Jonathan, they'll see the debt transfers from the previous shell company."

"I know what they'll see, Dad!" Jonathan yelled, running a shaking hand through his hair. "I know! If they pull the funding, the creditors will file for involuntary Chapter 7 within seventy-two hours. We lose the firm. We lose the house. We lose everything."

I watched him from across the kitchen island, feeling a cold, delicious thrill coil in my chest.

*You should have looked closer at the contract, Jonathan,* I thought. *You should have wondered why Vanguard’s terms were so generous. Why they knew exactly where your financial skeletons were buried.*

Then, Jonathan's eyes landed on me.
