Chapter 5 - Sirens at the Gates

The sound wasn't champagne flutes falling. It was the heavy, rhythmic thud of tactical boots against polished Italian marble.

The double mahogany doors of the private dining room swung open so hard the bronze handles dented the drywall.

Four armed agents wearing navy tactical vests emblazoned with bold yellow letters—FBI—spilled into the room, their weapons holstered but hands resting firmly on their belts. Behind them walked three men and one woman in crisp, charcoal-gray business suits, carrying heavy leather briefcases.

The dining room descended into immediate, suffocating panic.

“What is the meaning of this?” Arthur, the CFO, shouted, his fork dropping onto his plate with a clatter. “This is a private event! You have no right to barge in here!”

The woman in the lead gray suit didn't flinch. She pulled a gold badge and a laminated federal credential from her breast pocket, holding it aloft with the practiced indifference of someone who had done this a hundred times.

“Special Agent Sarah Lin, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Financial Crimes Division,” she announced. Her voice cut through the terrified whispers like a laser. “We are executing a federal search and seizure warrant issued by the Southern District of New York.”

The word *federal* sucked every drop of arrogance out of the room.

Danielle scrambled out of her chair so fast she tripped on the hem of her emerald gown, tumbling sideways against a waiter’s rolling cart. Bread rolls and butter dishes crashed around her. “I don't know him!” she cried, pointing wildly at Richard. “I’m just a date! I don't work for him! I have nothing to do with this!”

Richard barely heard her. His eyes darted frantically around the room, searching for an exit, searching for an ally.

“Vance!” Richard bellowed, looking toward the corner of the room where Marcus Vance had been quietly standing near the bar all evening, holding a tablet. “Marcus! Call our legal counsel! Call Judge Brennan right now! Get these people out of my restaurant!”

Marcus took a calm step forward. He wasn't holding a cocktail. He was holding an encrypted USB drive in a plastic evidence sleeve.

“I can’t do that, Richard,” Marcus said mildly, his voice steady and devoid of the deference he had faked for five long years. “Judge Brennan signed the arrest warrant two hours ago. Based on the documentation I submitted under federal whistleblower protection.”

Richard swayed on his feet, his jaw hanging loose. “Whistleblower? You... you traitorous bastard!”

“Keep your hands where we can see them, Mr. Sterling!” an agent barked, moving in to block Richard’s path as he took an aggressive step toward Marcus.

I stood beside the fireplace, watching the spectacle unfold. My cheek throbbed with a dull, rhythmic ache, but my spine had never been straighter.
