Chapter 11 - The Knock After Dark

I stared through the plastic at the paper.

The name on the certificate wasn't Daniel. It was Patricia Bennett—authorizing the private, closed adoption of a baby girl born in Chicago in 1994.

“Patricia had a daughter before she had Daniel,” Vance explained quietly. “She gave that baby up thirty years ago to a family named Vance. To my parents, Emily. Patricia is my biological mother.”

My breath caught in my throat. The room seemed to tilt on its axis. “You’re... his sister?”

“Half-sister,” Vance said, her eyes flashing with cold resolve. “And that woman ruined my family before she ever laid eyes on you. I took this case personally because I know what they’re capable of when they’re cornered. Daniel and Patricia didn't just want your condo, Emily. Richard didn't post their bail out of brotherly love. The offshore account that wired the money isn't Richard’s. It’s registered under a corporate trust established in Maya’s name three days before she was born.”

Before I could process the terrifying implications of what Vance was telling me, the overhead lights in the recovery room flickered twice and died.

The hum of the HVAC system shut off, plunging the fourth floor into a sudden, suffocating silence. Red emergency exit signs glowed faintly in the hallway, casting long, bloody shadows across the linoleum.

From the hallway just outside my door, the steady, rhythmic sound of the guard’s chair squeaking stopped abruptly.

A heavy, wet thud hit the door, followed by the metallic click of the doorknob slowly turning from the outside.
