Chapter 9 - The Private Airstrip

Within fifteen minutes, the quiet Whitmore estate had transformed into a command post.

Two State Police cruisers arrived at the gates, their red and blue lights flashing silently against the ancient oak trees lining the driveway. Detective Sergeant Miller, a stern-faced investigator from the Major Crimes Division, strode into the sunroom with two uniformed troopers.

Richard laid out the documents on the dining table: the forged insurance documents, the diversion of the $180,000, the Aegis Maritime corporate links, and the purchase record of the flatbed truck.

Miller examined the papers with practiced, unhurried scrutiny. His jaw tightened as he reached the bottom of the Aegis corporate charter.

“We’ve been looking into Vance Logistics for six months on suspicion of high-value cargo theft,” Miller said, looking up at Grandma Eleanor. “We knew they were moving black-market electronics and pharmaceuticals out of the Newark docks, but we couldn't connect Robert Vance to the shell corporations on paper. This connects him.”

“Where are they, Detective?” Grandma demanded, her voice steel dipped in ice. “My grandson was murdered, my granddaughter was starved, and they are trying to flee the country with over three million dollars of stolen money.”

Miller keyed his shoulder radio. “Dispatch, this is Unit 4. Check the flight manifests at Mercer County Executive Airport and Sky Manor. Look for a twin-engine chartered Beechcraft or Cessna registered to Aegis or Vance. Intercept immediately.”

A crackle of static came over the radio. “Unit 4, we have an active flight plan filed twenty minutes ago at Mercer Executive. Tail number November-Four-Seven-Papa-Echo. Destination: San Pedro, Belize. Aircraft is currently taxiing to Runway 3.”

Miller’s head snapped up. “Let’s move!”

“We’re coming with you,” Richard said, grabbing his coat.

“Mr. Sterling, this is an active police apprehension—”

“I am the court-appointed trustee of the funds they are attempting to launder!” Grandma said, rising to her full height, her eyes blazing with an authority that left no room for argument. “And I will watch them put in chains with my own eyes!”

Detective Miller looked at the matriarch, saw the unyielding fire in her face, and nodded curtly. “Stay in your vehicle behind my cruisers. Let my troopers handle the tarmac.”

I held Lily tightly, wrapping her in a warm blanket. Grandma took my hand, squeezing it with surprising strength.

“You stay by my side, Maya,” Grandma whispered, her gaze fixed on the front door. “David deserves justice. And today, he gets it.”
